3. The horse...won the Kentucky Derby, broke his leg in the Preakness
Now I have to see him on the news 4 times a week and on Sportscenter every friggin' day, and I've learned more about infections to the goddamn hoof than I ever need or want to know? Y'know, THAT f!*king Barbaro?

Nah, somethin' tells me I don't give a shit either. A racehorse? What, does he talk? Did he give Bush the middle hoof? Or what? Nah, you aren't alone. I don't give a shit about that either. It seems there are missles flying yon and hither and I'm just hoping none of them stray and land on my head at the moment. There are definitely more important things going on right now.

Point: we post our pet pics all the time in the lounge....and using your logic, why should we even have a lounge since there are much more important things to discuss.

See.

13. Well...
People really were fascinated by this horse, especially people in the Philadelphia area. And while it would be nice for this horse to get better, I too am getting sick of hearing about him. I'd rather see people expend that energy trying to cut down on violence and poverty in Philadelphia (where Barbaro is being treated by the University of Pennsylvania, as I understand), than focus on a horse.

14. Those of us who love horses are following his recovery closely.
Many owners of pleasure and show horses have had their horses operated on for broken bones (although not as sever as Barbaro's injury) and have had to deal with founder, abcesses and laminitis. (I have two friends whose horses have screws in theri lower legs to repair fractures.) The veterinary hospital is the top equine medical facility in the nation. It is a research institution. Perhaps, the doctors can learn more about treating these sort of injuries and conditions in the process of caring for Barbaro.

My filly has medical insurance in case she needs surgery or treatment for an injury.

19. eew, that's just tasteless
I was at the "Great Match Race" at Belmont years ago when Ruffian pulled up during the race and they had to put her down. My only interest in Barbaro is whether vetinary medicine has gottem any better so that they can actually save a race horse so they could at least breed. It seems while the medicines have improved, the skittish nature of the beasts make recovery difficult at best.

28. the other day I saw a Barbaro feature on sportscenter
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 07:37 PM by fishwax
Until then, I honestly had no idea that all that had happened. (I was leaving the country on the day the Preakness was run, so hadn't heard anything about the injury.)

Anyway, this jeremy schapp schlock-fest was all about how this racehorse had touched the nation, comparing him to secretariat and affirmed (i think he threw in seabiscuit, too) and talking about how the whole country was concerned about barbaro. And I was like :wtf: I haven't heard anything. And even though I've been back in the country for well over a month now, I hadn't heard anybody mention him or ask me if I'd heard how he was doing. It all seemed like a very manufactured outpouring of sympathy.

I'm sure there are people who are interested and who are fans, and that's cool. I don't wish the horse any ill will. I just find it odd that it took so long for me to find out that HIS story was the one everyone had been talking and worrying about for the last six weeks, even though I'd never heard of it.

The end of the schlock-fest, so help me god, said that in the end, barbaro "affirmed" us all. :puke:

36. The Barbaro story has touched many people, myself included
First of all a confession. I'm a lifelong horse lover. I own a Thoroughbred myself. I'm a sucker for a good horse story.

There are a lot of things that make this particular horse story stand out. First of all, the obvious. Barbaro's a stunningly beautiful animal who showed incredible promise as a race horse only to have it end in a horrible accident. Millions of people watched in horror as he broke down and floundered to a stop in the Preakness. Most expected to see him die on their TV screens. Instead, in the most complicated surgery ever performed on a horse, Barbaro was given a chance at life.

Second, he's surrounded by what appear to be a thoroughly decent group of human beings from the skilled jockey who helped slow Barbaro and keep him calm in the first moments of the injury to the (admittedly) wealthy owners the Jacksons, who've visited him every day and told the vets to do everything they can for him--even if he's not sound enough for stud duty and turns out to be the worlds most expensive lawn ornament, to the former Olympian medalist and plane crash hero Michael Matz, the trainer, who clearly loves this animal--he also visits him every day--and has been through the emotional wringer these past few weeks. Then of course there's Doctor Richardson, who sometimes seems amazed that Barbaro has made it this far.

Third there's the horse himself who has shown not only an incredible will to live but a remarkable intelligence and adaptability. Thoroughbreds are high strung by nature and anyone who's seen footage of Ruffian after her fatal breakdown struggling with the people who were trying to save her life has to marvel at the way Barbaro stood calmly on the track and leaned his head into his trainer's chest while they put a temporary splint on his leg. The latest stories are about how he's not only learned to use the sling they put him in at times to relieve pressure on his hind legs after he developed laminitis--he sits down in it like a dog--he's also apparently able to communicate when he's tired and he wants the sling put on and has even started to play with it--there are stories about him boinging up and down in it like a kid in a jolly jumper. The people around him keep talking about the spark in his eye and they seem determined to stick with him as long as he's willing to hold onto life.

There's a lot of ugliness in this world and certainly problems that are more earth shattering than the story of an injured horse but there are many of us caught up in this story of an animal that should not by any reasonable standard, be alive, but who somehow seems to overcome every setback and does it with determination and style. It may not be rational but many see in Barbaro a symbol of a fighting spirit and even of hope.

38. I also care about Barbaro
The odds are so against that poor colt. Rarely do Thoroughbreds recover from a track injury.

Also the man himself, Secretariat died of the same aliment that Barbaro is trying to live through now.
He seems like such a good boy. He must have a great temperament to put up with what hes been putting up for the past few months. His trainer visits him daily. His former jockey just came by to see him last week.

I bet if the people who don't care stopped by his stall and saw him they would care.

48. Check out Tim Wooley's blog for the insider info on Barbaro
Tim's a trainer at Fair Hill where Barbaro was stabled before his accident. He and his excercise rider Alex talk to Michael Matz, the assistant trainer Peter Brette who was Barbaro's excercise rider and his regular vet Kathy who continues to visit him and keep tabs on his condition.

They've added Barbaro news to Tims existing blog and have become an unofficial news outlet for Barbaro's team. Tim jokes that he's the only horse trainer in the world who's more famous for his blog than his horses.

47. Well said
I grew up on a farm with horses. Mu gradfather wheat farmed with horses. They loved their horses and buried them when they died when it would have been so much easier to send the carcass to the rendering plant. Takes a crew of men a day to bury a horse. And wheat farming back then was very lavor intensive.

There is a lot of ugliness in horse racing but Barbarosa has decent owners. They are on record saying that they would have provided him with the same care had he been a gelding.

And I believe them.

39. If I saw that one of my friends had posted one of these heartless posts...
I'd dump their ass on the spot. "Zonkers", you are so cool, decent, and you really got to me with that comment about "not the life you chose"! People who don't care about animals are useless to me, the lowest of the low... what a tragic world this would be without the "innocents", the animals. Unlike the humans, I've NEVER been dissapointed by an animal... you people are prime examples. I absolutely hate that you are fellow liberals... how dissapointing is that?!? I assume you are all the type that don't slow down for animals in the road, right? I also assume that you are all afraid of horses among other animals... WIMPS!!! There are a million stories regarding horses and other animals saving human lives.

P.S. I'll think of you people tomorrow and hope you break a leg or two... (I'll be sleeping with my fingers crossed tonight.)
