That's what the various 0.22 guns are for. Besides, at close range, 0.22 is pretty painful. Don't forget, 0.25ACP and 0.32 ACP were pretty standard self defense rounds for a long time and even 0.22S was developed for that purpose. Anyway, in the event of a break-in situation, I would probably reach for my Sig 226 DAK (9mm Lug.)
I assume by "0.45" you mean 0.45 ACP and not 0.45 GAP or 0.45 Colt.

aka .30 Russian Short and 9mm Luger. My wife and I each have a 7.62x39mm rifle and a 9mm pistol, so that's why.
Runner-up is .223 Remington/5.56x45mm.
If the price of 7.62x39mm keeps going up, I may have to pick up a .22LR rifle of some sort. 7.62x39mm used to be $1.75/box, but it's way more than that now. :(
