1. Not enough stopping power in the 0.22LR
I'm going to have to go with the 0.45...

2. Paper targets are not that dangerous.
That's what the various 0.22 guns are for. Besides, at close range, 0.22 is pretty painful. Don't forget, 0.25ACP and 0.32 ACP were pretty standard self defense rounds for a long time and even 0.22S was developed for that purpose. Anyway, in the event of a break-in situation, I would probably reach for my Sig 226 DAK (9mm Lug.)

I assume by "0.45" you mean 0.45 ACP and not 0.45 GAP or 0.45 Colt.

3. 7.62x39mm and 9x19mm
aka .30 Russian Short and 9mm Luger. My wife and I each have a 7.62x39mm rifle and a 9mm pistol, so that's why.

Runner-up is .223 Remington/5.56x45mm.

If the price of 7.62x39mm keeps going up, I may have to pick up a .22LR rifle of some sort. 7.62x39mm used to be $1.75/box, but it's way more than that now. :(

4. .44 magnum; .460 Weatherby; .30-06
Though the 22LR is just perfect for prairie dogging.
