Poll question: The Hannibal Lecter Appreciation Poll |
|
Thomas Harris is one of the most underappreciated authors in the history of the English language. His phrases are turned with such precision and his imagery is so vivid...
I have just finished re-reading the three Hannibal books (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal). I have also just finished quietly cursing a favorite director of mine (Ridley Scott) for his BUTCHERY of Hannibal. If you have read the book, you know of what I speak, and if you haven't read the book, shame on you...go read it.
On to the poll...

1. GAWD I loved that book. |
|
I have re-read it 3 times.
Helps that I read about 2000 words a minute.

~I have read Hannibal, and find it hard to forgive Ridley Scott.~
The book was as good as the first one. I thought the first movie was better than the book and the last was just bad in every way the first one was good.

7. HOW could he butcher that ENDING? |
|
Sort of like taking a story about Jesus and changing the Good Friday part to the Marines showing up in a Blackhawk chopper and taking him off the cross to the cheers of the crowd.

Silence next, then Hannibal.
Harris is a writer on par with the best.

8. AND DON'T SEE HANNIBAL BEFORE READING IT!! |
|
Not like the movie is trash, it's good, it's just a lot different from the book.

I loved both Red Dragon and SotL as novels (in fact, read them before I saw the movies) and thought that the novel of Hannibal was absolute dreck.
It seemed to me that the studios paid Harris to write a novel based off their screenplay as quickly and with as little effort, talent and ingenuity as possible.

I thought Hannibal was AMAZING, but I won't try to convert you. Taste in books is very personal.

As I said, I typically really enjoy Harris's work so I'm not sure exactly what it was about that one...
