MP3 players....anyone have one other than the Ipod?
Or is that the best one?

My Dell Ditty (which came with my laptop) totally stopped working and the warranty expired and Dell doesn't care.

I guess I have to buy another one. Do I look like I'm made of money?

1. I have an IRiver H-10
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 04:35 PM by auntAgonist
I bought it on E-Bay at a greatly reduced price. It's a reconditioned one and I've had no trouble with it at all.

I found this one after searching iriver h10 on ebay.com

http://cgi.ebay.com/SEALED-iRiver-H10-PORTABLE-5GB-COLOR-MP3-FM-PLAYER-WTY_W0QQitemZ120010173316QQihZ002QQcategoryZ48683QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

OR...
You could try http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=iriver+h10&Submit=ENE&Ntk=all&N=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

they have reasonable prices. I've never had any problems ordering from them.

12. I have one of those too
It is pretty good, easy to use. Minor annoyances are the shuffle play feature which really is not random at all, so I use something called Easy H10 to shuffle all the songs on it and then play them in order.

It has an annoying habit of freezing up from time to time, which is easily remedied by pushing the reset button with a paper clip. Also it is a little larger than an Ipod (about the soze of a deck of cards). Still it is a pretty good value and works with the major music services.

I am pretty happy with it.

3. I take my Rio to the gym every day.
I'm not very kind to it. It's never given me a problem. Now, headphones are a different story. 6 pairs in 2 years.

4. well, I'm pretty cheap
and I have a JVC mp3 player....it looks like a regular cd player and plays mp3 discs, but it holds 104 songs, at a 192 k's per second...I spent 30 bucks on it, last year, so the player might be cheaper now...

I haven't jumped on the ipod/ipod look a like band wagon yet, cause they are WAY to expensive for me now...the JVC player I have works fine by me. I am still use to having 16 songs on cd's and the mp3 player, is very nice...nice having that wide range of music selection on just 1 disc...but, the ipods do look sweet, I'm just awaiting for them to drop below 100 bucks, for a 10 gig...;)

7. What's the difference between the iPod and other mp3 players?
Can only the iPod play mp4 format?

9. Any advantages to the mp4 format?
I'm not too familar with it?

I suppose other mp3 playes may not have quite the same ease when dealing with say podcasts and whatnot. Personally I've never been a fan of iTunes. I know you can view the iPod as a HD on the computer, but I found the process much quicker with my old bulky archos jukebox.

Though I'll admit the video quality on my sister's iPod is very nice, but draws battery power like crazy.

13. The difference is that Ipods do not work with music services
such as Napster to go, where you can downlaod music and take it with you (though you do not own the music) for a monthly fee. I have never successfully gotten iTunes to work with my player. If I download podcasts from itunes, I need to import them into Windows Media Player or winAmp to load them onto mine. But they play the same files formats (except most non-ipods don't play AAC files). I don't know what MP4 is.

19. I could never get Napster songs to "stay" on my old MP3 player
They would last about 3 weeks to a month before the license would expire and then I couldn't play any of the tracks. I would have to figure out how to update the license and it was always really impossible. I have been getting emails from them though saying that Napster is free now.

I have had an easy time with iTunes. But they are definitely geared toward only working with iPods. Kind of that whole Apple superiority/world domination sort of thing.

20. Napster isn't free
Still $15 a month. In order for the tracks to keep working, you have to keep paying (unless you buy the track). You have to connect the player once a month or so to update the licenses. I find the easiest way is just to download one track and transfer it and that seems to work ok. But I have had problems getting other music services to work properly sometimes too. So it isn't a perfect system by any means.

21. I meant to say M4A
M4A is Apple's own compressed music format. Has better sound quality than mp3 320 bit or variable bit.

8. I have the Sandisk Sansa 1 GB, and I love it
And that thing has been through all the punishment I could deliver to it.

It picks up FM like you wouldn't believe, too, which makes for a nice break when you're tired of listening to MP3s and WMAs. (I mostly have WMAs on it because they provide the same sound quality while taking up half the space.)

23. Question for you, 'cause I'm clueless.
I was looking at the Sansa MP3 Player 1 GB on Target's website and it says "stores approximately 500 songs". Is that right? And would that be in WMA format (since you say it takes up half the space)?

I'd like to purchase one, but I wanna make sure I get enough GB. And the FM tuner is a big plus, as is the price.

24. I think that's 500 WMAs
Right now my 1 GB has 250 songs on it with room for about 100 more (in WMA format). I have about 150 MP3s and 100 WMAs.

It's all the music I need at this point, but in the future I might upgrade to the Sansa 2 GB player. But I'll still stick with the same brand. This player has been great.

Plenty of memory, portable enough, and can hook to GPS and display maps and aerial photos in the truck, big.

I am a neo-luddite. Plus, I'm cheap. :D

18. I had a Creative Zen Micro
I hated the controls on it, it was too "loose" and I would scroll past the song I was looking for a million times. I really didn't like it, but the price for what you get is good. I gave it to my husband and he totally loves it though.

I ended up getting an iPod and I really like it a lot. The only thing that sucks about the iPods is the fact that it is pretty limited in the types of files it will accept. The prices have come down quite a bit in the past few months too, especially on the Nano.
