1. I-35
It's a big zipper stretched across the corn-fed belly of America.

I work right next to it, and avoid it as much as I can.

67. It's so true though... and funny... after living there for nine months...
now it seems weird to imagine someone saying anything but "the 405" there. Even though it would be even weirder to say "the 94" here. Strange regionalism that is.

And is California the only place they call highways "freeways?"

:hi:

166. No, it's a general western thing to use freeway
And a highway is much different from a freeway. Freeways have on and off-ramps, prohibit pedestrians and bicycles, and do not have stop lights. Highways on the other hand are intersected by cross streets by way of stop lights and sometimes allow pedestrians and bicycles. All interstates are freeways, many US highways are freeways in at least some areas, and many state routes are only highways.

I'd actually posit that it's the non-westerners who confuse everyone by using the wrong name for freeways :-)

100. Yep. We in NorCal never use the "the" ...
It's just 99 or 101 or I-80 or Highway 50.

Whenever I hear the SoCal regionalism calling a highway "the 10" or "the 5" it sounds strange to me.

When I'm down south, I never call the freeways by numbers -- it seems like they're geographically named down there: the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5), the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10) , the San Diego Freeway (I-405), the Ventura Freeway (101), the Hollywood Freeway, the Golden State Freeway, etc. So, I never use the numbers, but the name.

Westside unless absolutely necessary. I remember breezing down the 405 from the South Bay to the Valley midday without even slowing down, but that was about 40 years ago. Now you can't do it at 2 AM without running into congestion. Horrendous.

42. H-1, probably less than a mile.
We do too have interstate highways in the middle of the ocean so stop saying that! They were originally built to facilitate transfer of materiel between the various and sundry military bases (all four branches) that make O'ahu one of the most militarized places on Earth. While we're waiting for WWIII (any day now :scared: ), they're useful for creating gridlock that would get even a SoCaler's attention.

One wonders why the 'H-' designation is placed in front of them; we only have H-1, H-2 and H-3, (and now H-201, the former HI 78) and the lowest number in use on the mainland is 4, Tampa-Orlando-Daytona. What, the puny little island state can't have the lowest number? Sheesh.

51. They are turning Highway 74 into an Interstate.
I live in the town where Highway US #1, US 220, and Interstate 74 intersect each other. Highway 1 and 220 junction in the county where I live and the junction is what crosses the new Interstate 74 right near the bypass they just put in. And they are adding Interstate 73 bypass here too. I don't completely understand the difference between all the road names. I just follow what the map says when I go anywhere.

Richmond County (Rockingham) is known as the "hub" for major drug trafficing because #1 goes all the way from Florida to Maine and 74 goes from the beach to who knows where. We are a small town full of cocaine, crack, meth, speed, some heroin, and who knows what else. I never went far enough into the drug scene to get to the harder drugs, but I've heard they are plentiful here. It's something my aunt points out every time I ask anything about this place. It's the "hub of the southeast," she always says.

127. It may be an interstate highway, but it's not an Interstate Highway.
The Interstate Highway System is the national network of freeways established by the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956.
That's why it's U.S. 101, not Interstate 101.

When Houston floods, I-10 shuts off downtown, since a section goes under another highway. The neighborhood becomes much quieter.

The Blasters played at Fitzgerald's some years ago. This Houston club is about a block from an on ramp to I-10. One of the Alvin brothers invited everyone to visit. "Just get on I-10, head west, & get off at the Downey exit."

160. I'm Closest To I-55, But. . .
. . .I-57 is pretty close too! One is about 4 miles west, the latter about 9 miles east. Then, i'm about 10 miles south of I-80, which is in South America. At least that's what folks who live in Chicago think!

180. Interstate 20 is less than a mile north of my place and I am
maybe 3 miles from the I-35/I-20 Interchange.

Another 7 miles to the North is the I-35/I-30 Mixmaster.

183. I got a spanking because of I-5.
Walking home from school, I lost my report card in the mud when they were moving houses out and excavating where I-5 runs through North Portland. My mom accused me of burying it in the mud on purpose. I was astonished that she could think such a thing, and even after she talked to my teacher and found out my grades were exemplary, I never did get an apology.

Dang, 45 years (or so) later and my feelings are still hurt over that.

But I digress. I live close to I-205, which loops east of I-5.

I am right between I-15 (about 3-4 miles to my east) and I-805 (about 3 miles to my west). And I am close to where I-805 merges with I-5.
