Statement as of 2:06 PM PDT on July 19, 2006
... Dangerously hot weather expected late this week and weekend...While temperatures this afternoon are slightly cooler than the past few days... another warmup is expected to begin tomorrow with record high temperatures possible by the end of the week and weekend across inland locations. At this point... Friday and Saturday appear to be the hottest days... with the Mercury heading toward 105 degrees in the warmest inland valleys of the Bay area... and to around 115 degrees in southern Monterey and San Benito counties. In addition... a persistent southeast flow will continue to pump mid and upper level moisture toward the region... adding to the humidity levels. The combination of intense heat and somewhat elevated humidity will produce very uncomfortable... and at times dangerous conditions... with heat index values possibly reaching 110 degrees in many inland areas during the day. Nights will also be very warm... with some higher terrain locations remaining in the 70s to lower 80s. Along the coast it will also be warmer than normal... but a weak sea breeze will keep it from getting too hot. A large dome of upper level high pressure over the Great Basin will expand north and westward over the next few days... bringing the record setting heat into much of California... and eventually Oregon and Washington.
Those who must work outdoors... or who are planning outdoor activities late this week and weekend should exercise extreme caution and take precautions to avoid heat related illness. Limit exposure to the heat... wear lightweight and light colored clothing and drink plenty of water. Prolonged exposure to heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Never leave children or pets in enclosed automobiles and check on the elderly. If you must exercise... do so only in the early morning or late night hours. Remember that these conditions are also very dangerous for fire weather concerns... be responsible when camping or doing any kind of outdoor recreation.
