If I Can Hear The Bass From One Of Those "Boom-Boom" Cars...
... as it passes through my neighborhood--one street over--and if my living room windows are closed, and a/c running, and the TV is on--I wonder what it must sound like INSIDE the car?

Gah!

Is it some sort of mating call? Do chicks really dig guys who have loud automotive stereo systems?

1. It's sort of like a hybrid...
...the vibrations from the woofers help propel the car down the road.

Considering the quality of the average "pet peeve" thread in the lounge, this one is actually quite justified.
Do you think the driver of such a car is able to hear a honk, scream or bicycle bell?

Certainly no reason to post something like that.

5. There was that song in the 80's by L'Trimm
Cars That Go Boom

How many kinds, where can we start?
yeah
I like the ones with the pretty eyes,
Well i like all kinds of guys.
Stop. What happened, how about the ones we especially like?
Which ones?
You know the ones with the cars that go..
I hear you..
Hit it!

It was me and the possy with Bunny (G)
We were cruising in the Jag or the Lambourgini,
When low and behold there appeared a mirage,
He was hooking up a car in his daddy's garage.
We stopped short, did a double take,
He was looking so fly, I thought I wasn't awake.
He was obviously hooking up bass, I asume,
But then he turned a little button and the car went boom.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.
We like the cars, the cars that go boom.
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.

We like them short, and we like them tall,
We like them one, and we like them all.
They're always adding speakers when they find the room,
Coz they know we like the guys with the cars that go boom.
And see my boyfriend really knows where it's at,
He's got 50 inch woofers all along the back.
He makes a comment on going to my room,
I'd rather stay out with his car that goes boom.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.
We like the cars, the cars that go boom.
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.

Now if your car ain't got it, go out and get it,
We like the boom and don't you forget it.
So turn down the treble, and flaunt your bass,
So your car can be heard almost any place.
Coz when you're in the street you can't go far,
Without hearing the boom pouring out your car.
So if your speaker's weak, then please turn it off,
Coz we like the cars that sound so tough.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.
We like the cars, the cars that go boom.
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.

Everybody just beep your horn
Everybody just beep your horn at us,
Now clap!
Hit it!
Beep, beep beep beep beep!
Come on everybody!
Hey, hey hey hey hey!
Beep, beep beep beep beep!

it has nothing to do with age.

21. I killed my hearing in the 80s at a Cheap Trick concert, and loved it!
Has everything to do with age. If the damage to the body ain't worth the fun, you're too old!

That, and since I can't hear anymore, I have to turn it up!

22. Bass frequencies aren't nearly as damaging to hearing
as midrange and treble frequencies. Low bass only becomes a danger when the sound pressure (which some of these cars are indeed capable) becomes strong enough to physically rupture the eardrum. The usual means of hearing loss, damage to the cilia hairs in the cochlea, doesn't occur from bass frequencies.

It's still highly annoying, and I have yet to hear one of these "boom" systems that can play real music with any kind of fidelity. I had a nice hi-fi in my old '90 Thunderbird with two 12" subwoofers in the trunk and 5.25" MB Quart coaxials in the doors, but it wasn't set up for "boom" racket, it was set up for audiophile listening. It sounded magnificent...I used to crank Mannheim Steamroller Christmas on it during the holidays. :D Classical organ sounded immense on it too...I felt like I was driving down the street in a cathedral!

are so dated and have been for 10 years, so the idiots that have them that do it because the appearance they think makes them cool, Badasses, tough or a rebel need to get a clue. They really became popular about the time Vanilla Ice was on top of the world so when ever I hear it I associate it with Vanilla Ice and laugh at the idiot behind the wheel.

12. So often, the speakers sound "blown"....
I don't know the technical term--but the sound is crappy. LOUD & crappy.

A friend of mine owned a Mercedes with GOOD loud speakers. When provoked, he would crank up the Beethoven or Wagner. "Ride of the Valkyries" was especially effective.

17. The city where I live passed an ordinance last year prohibiting
any nuisance noise you can hear over 30 ft. away. That includes loud parties, boom boom bass coming from cars, and anything else that people consider annoying. The exceptions are construction noises, sirens from emergency vehicles, and things of that nature. They can and do ticket the idiots who want to ruin their hearing with horribly loud bass... There's a $250 fine, and the idiots not only lose their hearing, they lose their money too.

I cannot imagine what it sounds like inside the car. I've been to some very loud concerts, but I'm sure that's far worse...

26. I hate that too-if my windows rattle when they drive by, it's too loud
If you set off everyone's car alarms as you pass, it's too loud.

I think that men who do that are trying to overcompensate for something that they think they are lacking. I don't think that they are trying to catch women when they do that, I think they are trying to impress their male friends with their stereos. "Mine's louder" is like "Mine's bigger" to them.

"...The Beast is as strange a vehicle as you're likely to see. A remote control works the volume levels from the outside, where it's safe. The windshield is 3 inches thick, to prevent it from blowing out. Pneumatic pistons pull the doors shut with thousands of pounds of pressure, maintaining an airtight seal and stopping them from flying open. The body panels have been stiffened to keep them from crumpling under the force of the beat..."

32. my favorite thing is to hear one of those cars go by, with a 50,000,000
watt subwoofer or whatever, and first hear the booming, undefined bass notes from whatever they're blasting, and then hear a series of car alarms go off, as it sets them all off one after the other as it passes them.

But hey, I guess if I didn't somehow enjoy a fairly constant assault on the senses, I'd move out of the city.

When he turned it up, It felt like my whole body was vibrating. At the time, I thought it was cool because I was young and stupid. Now I just think it's an outdated cry for attention and when I see cars like that, I always think, "Dude, that is SO 1991."
