Manilow Music Used To Chase Off Teens

Barry Manilow is more than a little annoyed (or embarrassed) that some Australian officials blasted his songs over a loudspeaker on weekend nights in hopes of driving a group of rowdy adolescents out of a residential neighborhood.

The boisterous teens – about 100 of them - had been gathering every weekend playing loud music, racing cars and driving homeowners’ batty. So the residents hit back, cranking “Mandy”, “Weekend In New England” and other Manilow tunes for up to three hours each night.

“Frankly, I think if you played anyone’s music for that long you’d drive any rationally minded human out of their mind,” the Las Vegas Hilton headliner says. “But have they thought that these hoodlums might like my music? What if some of them began to sing along to Can’t Smile Without You? Or lit candles when I Write the Songs Played? What if it actually attracted more hoodlums?”

6. A common tactic around the world, including malls
Play music that doesn't appeal to the crowd you don't want there.

Classical music to drive away the teenagers; ultra loud cRap if you want to drive away people with taste and leave your store filled with just the morons who will pay $200 for ripped jeans and ugly t-shirts.

And so on.
