1. My Mom does too...
Doesn't mind me saying "shit" but I recently was angry at som kids in the neighborhood, and I used the "f-word" a few times in an e-mail to her.

Yup, she chewed me out. And I'm 46! :eyes:

2. Good for her. It shows a lack of respect to cuss around a woman
that doesn't appreciate vulgarity. Especially an older woman.

I know, who gives a $#!+ about "respect" these days?

7. No one automatically deserves respect.
Respect is earned, not given. If someone does something that warrants cussing, it doesn't matter what their age or gender is.

Like I said, if someone does something that warrants disrespect, they should get it no matter what. People shouldn't just get a free pass to stomp all over you and disrespect YOU because they're older or female.

20. I disagree, also.

If I encounter a little old lady, who is a bit senile and cranky,
and gets snippy with me for any reason, I practice restraint.

That lady might be me 20 years from now.

21. Senile is one thing.
My grandmother went senile before she died, but she was never mean to a single person. People should be old enough to know that you need to be considerate of others, and if they are not, they don't deserve any more restraint or respect than you'd show to an 18 year old that is disrespectful. That someone has been alive longer than you has no bearing on whether or not that person is a total and complete jerk.

3. I curse and swear like a sailor, but
if I use a word that offends the person I'm speaking to, whether it's my mother or just an acquaintance, I always apologize. I think it's just good manners to respect the other person's sensibilities, even if I think they're silly.

5. Your Mom deserves more respect than that!
I don't use vulgar language around anyone. My perception of people that do is that they lack the verbal skills to express themselves properly. It shows a lack of respect to those you are talking to and really is unnecessary. Yes, I look down upon those that can't refrain from cussing.

11. Well, I look my nose down at you.
I see people like you as having an inferiority complex, trying to prove to the world that they're better than everyone else because they avoid a few harmless words. There's a difference between "can't express" and not feeling like you have something to prove every minute of every day. Guys like Kerry and myself are quite confident in the content of our respective vocabularies and don't need to back it up in every day casual conversation with regular people by continally attempting to talk over their heads.

13. It has nothing to do with me. It is out of respect for others.
I don't want to hear meaningless foul language. I assume others would rather not hear it either. Out of respect for others I don't cuss. There is no reason to, I can express myself with real words.
You may think I am trying to "talk over your head" but in reality I am showing respect. By all means, continue to use whatever foul language you think you need to express your point of view. I will continue to be amazed at your crude behavior.

14. They're just words.
You do realize that, correct? What exactly makes a word ugly, besides your perception of it? Why is it crude behavior when literally everyone does it from time to time? And is that to say you find nearly everyone to be crude merely for their choice of words? Or do you still believe in the ridiculous notion that certain language is unacceptable based upon an antiquated view of social caste systems, where such language was only deemed appropriate by the plebeians and not suitable for nobility (even though nobility most assuredly used the language themselves in most cases more frequently than the plebs)?

Granted, there's a time and place for it, and it's not appropriate in a professional environment, but in every day conversation, what exactly is the problem?

Obviously, this DOES stem from an inferiority complex on your part. You say it yourself - you find such behavior to be "crude", which is to say that everyone that doesn't act exactly like you is somehow less of a person than you are. To base such an assumption of superiority upon solely a choice in vocabulary is, quite frankly, no better than using skin color or income as a benchmark. For what other reason would one use such a superficial standard to judge one's worth if they weren't overwhelmingly concerned for their own standing in society?

You're psychologically evaluating someone and determining he
has an" inferiority complex" because he doesn't like foul language?

Then, you've determined he " feels superior" to those who use it?

This is a joke, right?!?

How arrogant, short sighted and assuming of you.

Oh, maybe you just forgot to insert the sarcasm tags.

30. I understand what you're saying. However ,
I see the original one as stating;

"It has nothing to do with me. It is out of respect for others.".

Why is that so hard to understand?

He did not delve into your psychological make up. When you persisted,
he simply stated " continue with the crude language".

My, but this is getting very circular.

31. I see that line as a cop-out, quite frankly.
The post says that, but it goes on to just say that the author sees people who use that language as crude, so clearly there's a lot more to it that just because it bothers other people. Furthermore, there are clearly more people that it doesn't offend than people that it does offend, so one obviously need not always be careful to avoid cuss words.

whom you use them with.

Look, I swear from time to time.
I'm no angel and I don't want to be one.

But I'm not going to cuss around an elderly person, especially
one that's senile any more than I would cuss around a mentally
challenged person with Tourette's syndrome.

This thread started with the author stating his doesn't want to
cuss around his Mom. Good for him!

37. Okay- lets LOOK at the "f-bomb" as the O.P. called it.
My "*ucking" car won't start.- When has your car ever had sexual intercourse?

My "*ucking" toe hurts. - You use your toe for intercourse?

My "*ucking" boss wants me to work late.- Yes, your boss probably does have sexual intercourse but it isn't an issue in this case.

Is it too difficult to leave the word OUT? It does nothing to help describe the situation.

I am not a prude, I don't lead a sheltered life. I just decided years ago that I would try not to be crude and vulgar in my conversations. People have actually complimented me on my manners compared to my co-workers. When I get upset or angry I don't explode into a string of expletives. It never makes the situation better.

18. I'm pretty sure it was my mom who taught me how to curse...
We have a pretty informal relationship, well so does everyone else in my family meaning I feel free to talk about and say just about anything in front of them. After all we are all adults and they are just silly words. Of course there are situations were I would reserve my language; I try not to curse like a sailor in front of strangers, children, nuns, etc it's just a matter of using common sense and good manners. Besides there are some situations when you become so hopping mad that no other word will do in that situation...it's not a conscious decision more instinctive on my part.

19. Do any of you guys remember seeing that outrageously
funny animation about the f word. It had strains of Vivaldi (I think) playing and this British guys saying "f*ck. . .the most versatile word in the English language. . .It can be used as a noun, a verb, an adjective, a transitive verb. . ."etc. The animation showed these two stick figures doing various things to each other. It was a riot. I lost the link to it in a recent computer crash though.

Anyhow I had been telling my son and his friends that if they used the f word in a derogatory way it could wreck their future sex lives due to the negative association.

So I showed them the animation and they started going around saying "Oh the most versatile word in the English language you." It was pretty funny and they couldn't get detention for that.

But still is a lot of fun for sure. Thanks again.
