Anybody know a great recipe for margaritas?
I love margaritas, but have recently been disappointed with many of the ones made by bartenders anymore and online recipes.

Most of the margaritas I've drank have had a coconut/salty taste. Way too salty.

So, any good margarita recipes? I hate the coconut or salty taste, preferring the strong citrus taste (i.e. limes). As for strength, it doesn't matter as long as doesn't have a strong alcohol bite.

Any recipes would be greatly appreciated!

1. There shouldn't be a coconut taste at all in a standard margarita.

If you don't like the salty taste, just ask for it with a little salt or no salt. Personally, I drink them "no salt."

The standard recipe for a margarita is...
1 oz. tequila
1/2oz triple sec
Balance with sour mix.

2. Coconut? What the fuck? Jesus Christl, I hate American quote "humanity".
The Margarita was prefected years ago, but Americans - at least the current crop of them - are so goddamned stupid that they want drinks that are sugary, taste like Hi-C punch, and are easy to drink; just like their TV, Movies, and music: they don't want to think or have to "learn" how to appreciate anything.

No shit bar will know how to make a Margarita - they will all think that a Margarita requires a blender; when, in fact, blenders are anethema to the Margarita.

You have to go to a pricey bar that hires actual bartenders, not "spray nozzle captains", to get a real margarita.

3. Here is whoisalhedges' margarita recipe:
Here's what you need:
Tequila (blanco, preferably, unless you want your margarita to look all jaundiced)
Triple Sec (or other orange liqueur -- Grand Marnier is fine, if you like)
Lime juice (I like Rose's sweetened -- but you can squeeze your own and sugar to taste)

Mix them. You need more tequila than the others, but I've never been ace at measuring. I just mix till it tastes right. Add a bunch of ice.

At this point, for frozen, put the whole mess in a blender till smooth.

4. Thanks. I have everything but the lime juice. I'll pick that up when I'm
out tomorrow.

8. I used to bartend...
I agree with Heidi, however I would like to make a few recommendations.

Tequila - I prefer the anejo or aged versions, they have a smoother, less harsh taste to them. I recommend Hornitos, Sauza Commemorativo (sp?), or Herradura.

Triple Sec - Grand Marnier all the way. If you want blue margaritas, try Blue Curacao.

Lime Juice - fresh is better but Rosa's will do. You will need sugar (prefer Sugar in the Raw) if you use the fresh stuff.

Sweet and Sour Mix - don't cheap out on this stuff. You'll need it as some type of stock to tie everything together.

I recommend the following ratios (but experiment to suit your tastes):

1 part tequila
2 parts Triple Sec
4 parts Sweet and Sour Mix
Lime Juice/Sugar to taste.

Remember, experiment often and drink your mistakes. ;)

5. I've never heard of coconut in a margarita
I had to google to see if there was such a thing. There is!

Coconut Margarita

From Garduño's Margarita Factory

1 cup ice
1 teaspoon cream of coconut, such as Coco Lopez
2 ounces pineapple juice
1 ounce tequila
2 ounces sweet and sour
1/2 ounce orange-flavored liqueur, such as Triple Sec
1 teaspoon shaved, toasted coconut, for rim

Place ice in a blender and add remaining ingredients except toasted coconut. Blend for 8 seconds. To make the drink thicker, add more ice and blend.

Dip wet rim of a large margarita glass in toasted coconut. Pour blended mixture in the glass.

Makes 1 drink.

I'm surprised at the things I learn here. :)

7. Reclining margaritas...
sprinkle a wedge of lime with salt, and bite into it. Lie face up on the bar and open your mouth while your friend pours tequila and triple sec into your mouth. Continue until :puke:
