over in one of the other forums, when viewing a certain thread, a little notice appears in a grey box on another posters message with MY IP address, and a little note that "all your dbase belong to us"....should I treat it as just a joke or something else? very freaky and a little unsettling.

It's fairly easy to post html including simple programs on Internet Forums like DU ("XSS"). Especially people are using the Internet Explorer to read the forum, it's child's play. In the worst case someone can hijack your DU account, not your your real-life data.

I think the program basically says "Display the user's IP address," so everyone sees their own address. Nobody else sees yours.
