11. Just watch your knees
As one who has just got out of knee surgery, my ortho clinic had ALOT of injured cheerleaders.

Apparently Cheerleading and Volleyball are the two most injury prone sports.

15. definately true,
my daughter has had shin splints and has had to have her ankle operated on so far. She's also doing PT for other ailments although she was born with them, they are more pronounced as a result of her cheerleading. But she feels (and the ortho's seem to agree) that her cheering poses no greater risks than what could happen to any active 16 year old.

But to add to the injury issue, the flyiers are the ones who tend to be more at risk. Those who are fortune enough not to so small to be thrown through the air like rag dolls would seem to be less at risk. My only saving grace is that my daughter is 5'3", 135lbs of pure muscle so her chances of being thrown around are pretty slim.

18. Yep - but the throwers are the ones with knee problems
So make sure she knows never EVER lock her knees!

Otherwise let her know she's supposed to have fun :)

20. oh she knows all right,
she's been doing competitive cheering for the last 4 years.

And to acknowledge what was mentioned earlier, competitive cheerleading is a sport. I'd challenge anyone here to go through what she has to go through just to stay up to the level that's being required now adays.

21. Much more of a sport than bowling or golf IMHO
It used to not be - ever see 70's cheerleading?

Once they started throwing dance and gymnastics into it, that changed everything.

30. Yup — changed it so it's not cheerleading anymore
I dunno what to call it — auxiliary sideline dance/gymnastics, maybe. But the actual leading of cheers is certainly no longer a priority.

22. And despite what they tell you
Don't forget to pack on muscle!

It will make you weigh more, but you'll be less injury prone.

Just eat your lean protein and STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM CREATINE :)

Just some wisdom from an injured jock :)

25. I've been trying to exercise more
Even though people are like "OMG YOU DONT NEED TO BECAUSE YOUR SO THIN" I'm not exercising to lose weight, I'm exercising to gain muscle, which is a good thing...goes in one ear and out the other to some people.

What's creatine? :s

26. Creatine is a supplement
It in itself is totally safe - it just packs water into your muscles. But where it's dangerous is it gives you a false sense of strength, and you end up getting injuries because you push yourself more than you should.

For exercise, hit the weights over cardio and be sure to eat before and after a workout :)

14. Don't be ashamed
Cheerleading is a sport, like anything else. And because over the past 10 years the sport element has been pushed over the popularity element, cheer is less about sorority-type girls and more about competitive gymnastics.

28. I know, I'm teasing
When I was in HS (1978-82), it was just a "club" where all the daughters of the local doctors and lawyers belonged. Most were not the least bit athletic.

One of my favorite movies is "Bring It On." I love it...

17. College Basketball Cheerleader
My mother wouldn't let me me try out in High School for some bizarre reason forcing me to be in the marching band (I loved playing music but never hung out with anyone in the band because they were a bunch of fundie freaks). But when I got in college as a flook some girl on my floor bugged me to try out for the College Basketball team and I made it. I cheered for 4 years

24. No. I was on the Anti-Cheerleader Anti-Pep squad.
:P NewWaveChicks can't be seen with cheerleader types in high school or otherwise. I didn't belong to the cheerleader clique, nor did I want to. The ones at my high school were superficial and snotty. They knew how to do a herky (ode to ZombieNixon!), but they didn't know how to treat people like human beings.

I was also the committee chairperson of the college Anti-Pep, Anti-Perky squad. This also included anti-frat factions and anti-sorority leagues. :P
