2. I was THE Audio/Visual Nerd! |
|
National Honor Society members at my school were selected by a vote of teachers. It had less to do with grades and was mostly a popularity contest.
Because I was the A/V nerd, most of the teachers liked me & I was voted in but I turned it down.

That sounds like a crappy way to do the selection.

We both had good enough grades to make it on academics but we were offended by the selection process. Unfortunately the NHS sponsor contacted our parents who signed us up and paid our dues anyway to keep from turning or backs on this "great honor" because of our convictions.
So I was part of NHS whether I wanted it or not.
That was 25 years ago and I can't think of a single advantage NHS ever got me.

6. In honors class, but didn't apply myself enough for NHS... |
|
However, I was in the International Thespian Society (honor cords for that) and I founded the Gay-Straight Alliance (not surprisingly there was a huge overlap in membership). I wasn't in the French Club, but the French teacher would let me join them on their cool field trips (like Les Mis & Cirque du Soleil). I also worked on the SEED literay magazine. Theoretically, I was also in the gifted & talented creative writing group, but I only went if it fell during a boring class, because I didn't like the woman that ran it. My actual creative writing mentor for my ind. study was way cooler and we're still good friends.
Okay, I think I'm officially a nerd. I also took care of the animals in the biology labs for extra credit (why I took AP is beyond me...but I somehow passed the exam, despite writing one of my essays about socks instead of RNA).

I disliked NHS even though I was in it, but enjoyed debate (it got me out of town, and I enjoyed making out with assorted speech and drama chicks on the long bus rides). I was state debate champ once, NFL district champ once, and went to nationals twice, where my two different team-mates and I managed to take a few rounds.
Now I don't find much use for debate.
But I enjoy what it taught me.

8. CAPTAIN of the quiz bowl team |
|
But not willingly. My parents made me. It was shown on local public TV all the time because they needed so much filler in those days. Me glaring and rolling my eyes every time I had to answer a question.
By the time my brother got to HS ten years later, quiz bowl was cool; he even got to go on overnight trips and was captain of the college bowl team when he got to college. Unlucky me had to be the quiz bowl pioneer when it was very uncool.
My school didn't have a National Honor Society (experimental 1970s; we had 9 week terms and no clubs at all, not even a student council) but I was invited to the honors banquet every year for the students who would've been NHS if we'd had one.
I was in band too. Yep, a nerd.

I was also in the Checker Club in high school, which had nothing to do with playing checkers, but was for advanced drafting students, and you had to be invited. (In drafting, a checker is kind of like an editor.)

I don't know how. My grades weren't that great. My SAT scores must have balanced them out or something. I spent much of my free time causing mental and emotional anguish to the principal and I had so much free time to wander during my senior year. In fact, I don't think anybody ever knew where I was supposed to be or they didn't care.
My advice to young DUers: if you want to spend a year cutting class without effort or consequences, make good friends with the hall monitor people on the first day. Walk around. Learn their names. Ask them about their kids & summer. Then, if it seems like you're going to get stopped by them later on in the year, simply strike up a conversation using the intel you gained. Trust me. It works.

Actually, I'm hardly a math wiz, and had totally forgotten I was on the math team, but there I was in the team photo in the yearbook I was perusing the other day. I vaguely remember going to a "math contest" which was basically sitting in a big room taking a test with kids from a bunch of schools. I really must have been insane to join that club.
I was also in the National Honor Society, Mensa (my dad signed me and my siblings up by submitting our IQ test scores, scarily my brother actually proudly wears his Mensa pin to this day), and the Hi-Q Team. Hi-Q was a local TV program along the lines of Jeopardy for high school kids.
But on the cool side, I was my senior class president, and a photographer/editor of the yearbook! So perhaps I wasn't an uber-geek.

my grades were complete shit. I hated people in the Honors Societies. Then I joined the US Army and got some discipline (and a lot of partying out of my system) and then went to college. Once there I carried a 3.8 gpa and started getting invites to the college Honors Societies. I didn't want to feel like a hypocrite so I told them to go piss up a rope.

In A-V, we even had jackets, which were my suggestion. They were really cool jackets too, better than the ones the sports teams had.

I couldn't believe it when "you" called me once the summer fling was over wanting to see me again. Dang - I might have saved myself a lot of grief. That picture was taken on a trip to Paris (I'm sitting on the top of Notre Dame, you can see Sacre Coeur in the background) when I had several choices to make, and wound up with my fiance. It's turned out bad, but I have two wonderful kids, and looking back does no good, as you say.

50. I was in the National Honor Society |
|
I was one of the math brains at my school, and during my sophomore, junior and senior year I had participated in a National Mathematics competition, in which the total scores of the top three scorers were entered in a statewide contest. Each of these times I was one of the top two scorers on the test from my school. I and one other person were known as the two math brains at our school. In fact during my senior year my school was the first in the state in the competition, and my score helped to so place my school.
I think that this had probably everything to do with my being chosen for the National Honor Society. That and the fact that my academic grades were good, mostly A's and B's, with my grade point average of above 3.5. I was especially good at math and the physical sciences, and was OK at classes like English and Literature.
I was also in the German Club and the Science Club.
The four qualifications for being chosen for the NHS were Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service.
I would not have wanted to say it to anybody at the time, but in some of these areas I don't think I really qualified. I was definitely not what one would consider to be a well-rounded student or person. And I definitely had some problems while in high school. It would take many years later to deal with my problems, and to become a more rounded person.
As it turned out, being in the NHS was something that sounded good, and was pleasing to my ego, but it made almost no difference to me subsequently. It was not something that I wanted to make any big deal about or mention when I went back to my high school reunions. I think I mentioned it one time to a teacher when talking about a classmate, who was also in the NHS.

and an "honorable mention" or whatever they call it for the National Merit Scholarship. I was NOT a nerd, however, although I had some nerdy friends. I am MUCH too cool to be a nerd.

I was also the captain of the cheerleading squad. I was a weirdo, essentially. Renaissance woman before it was cool... ;-)

We didn't have Spanish Club, or I probably would have been in that. I did Mock Trial, but not debate...whee.

76. I was kicked out of the Honor Society, as a junior, I think-- |
|
I made a D one semester in Drama. Eh--it wasn't that big a deal, but my mother almost killed me.
I was president of the Spanish Club and because of that was a member of Student Council. I tried debate but didn't do very well.
I was in all the music groups, though--chorus, triple trio, jazz band, everything but marching band.
