Do you have a Heartbreak Song?
You know, a song that reminds you of someone who shattered your heart, or a sad period in your life? Mine is We've Got Tonight, the song that was playing on the jukebox when I was 19 years old and the miserable rat I was desperately in love with confessed that he was already living with someone else. It was like it was scripted.

Every time I hear it, that whole scene plays out all over again. Except it doesn't hurt anymore, thank goodness!

What's yours?

5. Black Shadow
Edited on Fri Jul-21-06 06:42 PM by Xipe Totec
Sung in Galician

Cando penso que te fuches,
negra sombra que me asombras,
ó pé dos meus cabezales
tornas facéndome mofa.

Cando maxino que es ida,
no mesmo sol te me amostras,
i eres a estrela que brila,
i eres o vento que zoa.

Si cantan es ti que cantas;
si choran, es ti que choras,
i es o marmurio do río,
i es a noite i es a aurora.

En todo estás e ti es todo,
pra min y en min mesma moras,
nin me dexarás ti nunca,
sombra que sempre me asombras

- Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885)

When I think you have left me
black shadow that enshrouds me,
to the foot of my bed
you return mocking me.

When I think you are gone,
in plain daylight you appear,
and you are the star that shines,
and the wind that blows.

If they sing, it is your voice that sings;
if they cry it is your cry I hear,
and you are the murmur of the river,
shadow that enshrouds me

You are in everything and are everything,
for me and in me you remain,
and you will never leave my side,
shadow that always enshrouds me.

7. "Way Back Then" by John Prine
Night is falling
We're doing the things we do
You are acting just like me
I'm acting just like you
Do you remember
When you were my friend?
That's the way I'd like things
Just like way back then

Baby's sleeping
Brother is on the run
I am out undoing
All the good I've done
If you loved me
Tell you what I would do
Wrap the world in silver foil
Bring it home to you

Lately I feel
That I can't pretend
I may never ever see
The likes of you again
I take a walk, I come back home
Then I sit a spell
Watch the ponies dance around
The empty wishing well

Night has fallen
I've said the things I did
The only baby sleeping
Is when I was a kid
Do you remember
When you were my friend?
That's the way I'd like things
Just like way back then

ALWAYS ON MY MIND (Elvis Presley)

Maybe I didn't love you quite as good as I should have,
Maybe I didn't hold you quite as often as I could have,
Little things I should have said and done,
I just never took the time.

You were always on my mind,
You were always on my mind.

Maybe I didn't hold you all those lonely, lonely times,
And I guess I never told you, I'm so happy that you're mine,
If I made you feel second best,
I'm sorry, I was blind.

You were always on my mind,
You were always on my mind,

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died,
Give me, give me one more chance to keep you satisfied,
If I made you feel second best,
I'm sorry, I was blind.

You were always on my mind,
You were always on my mind.

**
there was no second chance.

15. hey Lizziegrace ..
you are so sweet to ask. Today is a good day. I took myself out shopping for a few lightweight groceries and I'm about to tidy up the kitchen a little bit. I've not taken any pain meds since bedtime last night and I'll take one at bedtime tonight. I adjusted my attitude a bit. :) It's hard feeling helpless, but I was reminded that I'm not 'hopeless'. Days will get better.

with friends like you here online, how can I not feel good.

thank you so much my friend.

14. The Dance - Garth Brooks
I just heard this on a cd I burned a few months ago. It's about loving and losing with no regrets. :(

The Dance
Written by: - Tony Arata

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars alone
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have chanced it all

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance

21. This one
You can look, but you can't touch
I don't think I like you much
Heaven knows what a girl can do
Heaven knows what you've got to prove

I think I'm paranoid
And complicated
I think I'm paranoid
Manipulated

Bend me
Break me
Anyway you need me
All I want is you

Bend me
Break me
Breaking down is easy
All I want is you

I fall down just to give you a thrill
Prop me up with another pill
If I should fail, if I should fold
I nailed my faith to the sticking pole

I think I'm paranoid
Manipulated
I think I'm paranoid
Too complicated

Bend me
Break me
Anyway you need me
All I want is you

Bend me
Break me
Breaking down is easy
All I want is you

I think I'm paranoid
I think I'm paranoid

Bend me
Break me
Anyway you need me
All I want is you

Bend me
Break me
Breaking down is easy
All I want is you

Steal me, deal me, anyway you heal me
Maim me, tame me, you can never change me
Love me, like me, come ahead and fight me
Please me, tease me, go ahead and leave me

Bend me
Break me
Anyway you need me
As long as I want you baby it's alright

Bend me
Break me
Anyway you need me
As long as I want you baby it's alright

30. Not the whole song, but a certain line from Pearl Jam's "Black"
***
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a Sun
In somebody else's sky
but why, why, why can't it be mine?
***

I know exactly what he's saying there, and it gets me everytime.

Also, this isn't a heartbreak song but everytime I hear it I get a big lump in my throat: "Time Stand Still" by Rush. It's about getting older

****
I turn my back to the wind
To catch my breath,
Before I start off again
Driven on,
Without a moment to spend
To pass an evening
With a drink and a friend

I let my skin get too thin
Id like to pause,
No matter what I pretend
Like some pilgrim --
Who learns to transcend --
Learns to live
As if each step was the end

Time stand still --
Im not looking back
But I want to look around me now
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now

Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger
Experience slips away...

I turn my face to the sun
Close my eyes,
Let my defences down --
All those wounds
That I cant get unwound

I let my past go too fast
No time to pause --
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain,
Whose ship runs aground --
I can wait until the tide
Comes around

Make each impression
A little bit stronger
Freeze this motion
A little bit longer
The innocence slips away...

Summers going fast --
Nights growing colder
Children growing up --
Old friends growing older
Experience slips away...
****

31. "Everything I Once Had"-The Honorary Title
The ULTIMANTE heartbreak song....
I can't really connect to it personally (im too young by most people's standards to have ever been "heartbroken") but I really feel the emotion from the singer though...

Lyrics
Everything I
You were, everything I

The bar on 1st Avenue, we went there solely for you
So you can flirt with my best friend
Kiss a girl, tell me why you're laughing

Well I won't hold on
No I can't hold on
to this

There's a hole in the trust that we
mapped out in my bed for six long months
There's a hole in the trust that we
mapped out in my bed
for six long months
for six long months
Well I won't hold on,
to this

February, Valentines Day
Did my best to avoid the red cliches
So you dumped me on the subway
On my way to work at 9 in the morning
Everybody else is holding bouquets
Now I'm holding my face in the basement
Scratching away for any trace
Of affection you will leave
Falling victim to the publics prey

I won't hold on
I can't hold on
I won't hold on
to this

Saw a sillouette,
the perfection, the outline
of my dreams, the blur that
made everything; I had them
put it all to shame

I just won't hold on
to this...

Anyone is suitable for you I,
for you I, guess tonight
Anyone is suitable for you I guess
For you I guess tonight
You weren't fazed
It's over with
You're my beautiful
You weren't fazed
It's over with you
You're my beautiful
You blew it, you blew it away,
You blew it, blew it away.

So sad...:(

32. Cheap Trick, The Flame
Another night slowly closes in,
And I feel so lonely.
Touching heat freezing on my skin,
I pretend you still hold me.
Im going crazy, Im losing sleep.
Im in too far, Im in way too deep over you.
I cant believe youre gone.
You were the first, youll be the last.

Wherever you go, Ill be with you.
Whatever you want, Ill give it to you.
Whenever you need someone to lay your heart and head upon.
Remember: after the fire, after all the rain,
I will be the flame.
I will be the flame.

Watching shadows move across the wall,
I feel so frightened.
I wanna run to you, I wanna call,
But Ive been hit by lightening.
Just cant stand up for fallin apart.
Cant see through this veil across my heart, over you.
Youll always be the one.
You were the first, youll be the last.

Wherever you go, Ill be with you.
Whatever you want, Ill give it to you.
Whenever you need someone to lay your heart and head upon.
Remember: after the fire, after all the rain,
I will be the flame.
I will be the flame.

Im going crazy, Im losing sleep.
Im in too far, Im in way too deep over you.

Remember: after the fire, after all the rain,

36. Ralph Towner's "Beneath an Evening Sky."
The first time I heard it, I was out west and went to visit a woman with whom I'd been obsessed for quite some time.

She was very nice to me that night, but I ended up spending the evening under the sky, talking with her sister, who was quite beautiful too, while the woman with whom I was obsessed dealt with her (increasingly unhappy) boyfriend.

My life went on to be great, but somehow the sadness of that evening and the sky and the woman and the sister and the song all remain.

I will say this about that evening: I resolved never again to let things get weird with a woman. It all made me ready to meet my wife.

42. "Both Hands" and "Overlap" by Ani Difranco
Especially "Overlap"

i search your profile
for a translation
i study the conversation
like a map
'cause i know there is strength
in the differences between us
and i know there is comfort
where we overlap

come here
stand in front of the light
stand still
so i can see your silhouette
i hope
you have got all night
'cause i'm not done looking,
no, i'm not done looking yet

each one of us
wants a piece of the action
you can hear it in what we say
you can see it in what we do
we negotiate with chaos
for some sense of satisfaction
if you won't give it to me
at least give me a better view

come here
stand in front of the light
stand still
so i can see your silhouette
i hope
you have got all night
'cause i'm not done looking
no,
i'm not done looking yet

i build each one of my songs
out of glass
so you can see me inside of them
i suppose
or you could just leave the image of me
in the background, i guess
and watch your own reflection superimposed

i build each one of my days out of hope
and i give that hope your name
and i don't know you that well
but it don't take much to tell
either you don't have the balls
or you don't feel the same

come here
stand in front of the light
stand still
so i can see your silhouette
i hope
you have got all night
'cause i'm not done looking
no, i'm not done looking yet

i search your profile for a translation
i study the conversation like a map
'cause i know there is strength
in the differences between us
and i know there is comfort

43. Don't think twice it's alright...... Bob Dylan
it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

48. Great Song....
I always thought of it more as an F-You song than a heartbreak song.

58. Yeah, that one.
Throw in a little Bob Seger "Hollywood Nights," except I ain't a midwestern boy.

She stood there bright as the sun on that California coast
He was a midwestern boy on his own
She looked at him with those soft eyes,
so innocent and blue
He knew right then he was too far from home He was too far from home

She took his hand and she led him along that golden beach
They watched the waves tumble over the sand
They drove for miles and miles
up those twisting turning roads
Higher and higher and higher they climbed

And those Hollywood nights
In those Hollywood hills
She was looking so right
In her diamonds and frills
All those big city nights
In those high rolling hills
Above all the lights
She had all of the skills

Dylan's is not an "F-you" song, by the way, it's a song about trying to hide yourself from the hurt.

Looking back, more than twenty years now, I forgive myself for being unsophisticated, and I realize the girlfriend who broke my heart was hardly any more sophisticated than I was. She simply had more money and was fighting much bigger demons within herself than I'd ever faced.

53. Alanis Morissette - Forgive Me Love
I went to your house
Walked up the stairs
I opened your door without ringing the bell
I walked down the hall
Into your room
Where I could smell you
And I
Shouldn't be here
Without permission
Shouldn't be here

Would you forgive me love
If I danced in your shower
Would you forgive me love
If I laid in your bed
Would you forgive me love
If I stay all afternoon

I took off my clothes
Put on your robe
Went through your drawers and I found your cologne
Went down to the den
Found your CD's
And I played your Joni
And I
Shouldn't stay long
You might be home soon
I Shouldn't stay long

Would you forgive me love
If I danced in your shower
Would you forgive me love
If I laid in your bed
Would you forgive me love
If I stay all afternoon

I burned your incense
I ran a bath
I noticed a letter that sat on your desk
It said hello love
I love you so love
Meet me at midnight
And no
It wasn't my writing
I better go soon
It wasn't my writing

So forgive me love
If I cry in your shower
So forgive me love
For the salt in your bed
So forgive me love
If I cry all afternoon

54. I have a hard time with most of Lyle Lovett's stuff
My ex turned me on to him and we saw a bunch of shows together. She's gone but his cd's still clog my music collection. It's a shame because he's so great and well, she wasn't.

56. "Where Do Fallen Angels Go" (Aerosmith) and "And She Goes On"
(Crowded House) are two that always remind me of my late daughter;
the one that always reminds me of a long-ago love is 'Miracles' by Jefferson Starship (I think they were Starship at that point, and if so, it's the last decent song they did....)

66. You guys need a Rick Danko vocal.
Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 06:05 PM by CBHagman
The Band had two vocalists guaranteed to break your heart: Richard Manuel and Rick Danko. Danko's performance of "It Makes No Difference" (from the Northern Lights, Southern Cross album) is my all-time heartbreak song.

http://www.song-teksten.com/song_lyrics/the_band/northern_lights_southern_cross/it_makes_no_difference/

It makes no diff'rence where I turn
I can't get over you and the flame still burns
It makes no diff'rence, night or day
The shadow never seems to fade away

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before

It makes no diff'rence how far I go
Like a scar the hurt will always show
It makes no diff'rence who I meet
They're just a face in the crowd
On a dead-end street
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more

Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle
They rattle the walls

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Well, I love you so much
It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before

The only other advice I have is that it's a bad idea to listen to Linda Ronstadt's version of "Long, Long Time" or Tracy Chapman's entire first album when you're feeling heartbroken.
