Is it Microsoft or is it me?
Since XP, the automatic conversion of MP3's to WM Files has been a royal pain in the ass, especially for those of us with iPod's. Recently, I updated to Media Player 10(?) despite my paranoia. Now, I can't pull up MP3's I KNOW existed--on my pc or external HD. I also can't seem to upload any songs from a Zappa disc (Ryko) that I know I should be able to. I think I'm getting blocked from accessing the files the way I need to. I can play the commercial disc, but I can't copy any songs. Worse, I can't read 1000's of files I know have to be there.

Who took my files, and how do I get them back?

Any help is appreciated.

1. OK, so I got the files from the store bought CD on the hd, but
I still can't find the MP3's that were there.

Does Windows Media Player upgrade put in any security software that won't allow me to recognize non-WMA files?

2. please clarify...
You go to the MP3 file and try to open it, and WMP refuses to play it? Is there any error message?

3. Try this.
I don't have this problem you describe so I'm whistling in the dark here but trying it can't hurt.

Go to: Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and stop the WMDM PMSP SERVICE, click on it's Start up type and Switch it to "Disabled". Then do the same for the WINDOWS USER MODE DRIVER FRAMEWORK. Reboot and see if it helps.

Assuming this is a DRM issue this may be enough to fix it. If it's something else then you've at least saved your machine from having to waste resources on two useless services and if Windows Media gives you trouble after then simply go back and re-enable them...
