My favorite Laura Branagan song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtUpvJa9FmY

Oh, the night is my world
City light painted girl
In the day nothing matters
It's the night time that flatters
In the night, no control
Through the wall something's breaking
Wearing white as you're walkin'
Down the street of my soul

You take my self, you take my self control
You got me livin' only for the night
Before the morning comes, the story's told
You take my self, you take my self control

Another night, another day goes by
I never stop myself to wonder why
You help me to forget to play my role
You take my self, you take my self control

I, I live among the creatures of the night
I haven't got the will to try and fight
Against a new tomorrow, so I guess I'll just believe it
That tomorrow never comes

A safe night, I'm living in the forest of my dream
I know the night is not as it would seem
I must believe in something, so I'll make myself believe it
That this night will never go

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Oh, the night is my world
City light painted girl
In the day nothing matters
It's the night time that flatters

You take my self, you take my self control
You got me livin' only for the night
Before the morning comes, the story's told
You take my self, you take my self control

I, I live among the creatures of the night
I haven't got the will to try and fight
Against a new tomorrow, so I guess I'll just believe it
That tomorrow never knows

A safe night, I'm living in the forest of a dream
I know the night is not as it would seem
I must believe in something, so I'll make myself believe it
That this night will never go

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control ...

3. RIP Laura...
I really like her stuff. She also had Solitaire, The Power of Love, How Am I Supposed To Live Without You? and Over You but her best songs were never played on the radio IMO. Sort of like Olivia Newton-John, whose radio songs were absolute shit but her folk/country songs from the 60s and 70s that were not radio hits were really, really good.

4. Laura Branigan and the Charts:
"Gloria" reached #2 for three weeks in 1982

"Solitaire" reached #7 in 1983

"How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" reached #12 in 1983 (long before Michael Bolton)

"Self Control" reached #4 in 1984

"The Lucky One" reached #20 in 1984 (a song I actually liked)

"Power of Love" reached #26 in 1987 (her last Top 40 hit)

Whatever you think of her music (and I don't care too much for it), this was a pretty decent showing for a pop singer.

5. Don't mention her version of Gloria...
That was originally an Italian love song -- not a song putting down some vacuous, slutty female -- by Umberto Tozzi, and the Branigan version (especially the awful English lyrics) qualify as cultural vandalism. :grr:

Gloria manchi tu nell'aria
manchi ad una mano,
che lavora piano,
manchi a questa bocca,
che cibo più non tocca,
e sempre questa storia,
che lei la chiamo Gloria.
Gloria sui tuoi fianchi
la mattina nasce il sole
entra odio ed esce amore
dal nome Gloria.

Gloria,
manchi tu nell'aria
manchi come il sale,
manchi più del sole,
sciogli questa neve
che soffoca il mio petto
t'aspetto Gloria

Gloria, Gloria chiesa di campagna, Gloria,
acqua nel deserto, Gloria,
lascio aperto il cuore, Gloria,
scappa senza far rumore,
dal lavoro dal tuo letto
dai gradini di un altare
t'aspetto Gloria.

pensando a Gloria.

Gloria, manchi tu nell'aria
manchi come il sale,
manchi più del sole,
sciogli questa neve
che soffoca il mio petto
t'aspetto Gloria

Gloria, Gloria, chiesa di campagna, Gloria,
acqua nel deserto, Gloria,
lascio aperto il cuore, Gloria,
scappo senza far rumore,
dal lavoro dal tuo letto,
dai gradini di un altare,
ti aspetto Gloria.
