Arrgh! I just got my own cellphone! Arrgh! I didn't want one! |
|
Mrs R used ours most of the time, and I only took it with me when I went on a business trip.
But we could get another line and phone for 10 bucks a month, and she calls me a lot from the cell phone, and this way calls between the 2 phones don't count against the minutes on either phone.
So I can keep it in my office and we can save $$ by having her call me on that line instead of my office number.
But I am NOT, Goddammit, going to become a Phone Fiddler (like she has), and I'm not taking it with me everywhere I go.
Nor giving anyone the number. Anyone wants to call me, they can get me during the day in the office.

I'm really curious. I simply cannot imagine talking to people that frequently, and having anythning useful to say.
I'm not being hostile here, just curious.

in the evening. But I guess kids don't hang out on corners anymore. Probably because these days some old fart would call the cops on them for "acting suspicious."
And that's too bad. I really wish kids your age could have some of the face-to-face social interaction we did in the 1960s. But I know you can't, and that's why the electronic communications (text, IM) have become so important to you.
I do not disapprove. Socializing by any method is important to teenagers. Maybe even essential.

My friends couldn't believe it. They'd say "Don't you want to know who's calling?" And I'd answer "If it's really important, the phone will ring again within ten minutes. If it doesn't, it wasn't an important call."
I count Caller ID as the best technology ever to be invented.

My grandmother had one in her bathroom, next to the toilet. She used it to call my aunt the time she slipped when getting up from the toilet. I hate to think how long she would have been stuck had she not been able to call for help.
As a physically challenged person, who lives alone, I now keep a phone in my bathroom at all times. I've never used it while "using it" though. That is disgusting.

I needed it for emergency contacts, especially while my Mom was sick. Other than that, I really try not to use it. And I especially will NOT give out the number to church people!! (except, again - in an emergency - and I am very clear on that.) When people ask "how can I reach you?" I tell them I have an answering machine. When they ask if I have a cell phone, I tell them "I'm not that important."

I knew pastors who felt it necessary to wear a pager. I always thought it was more a status symbol than a need. When someone asked me, "But what if someone dies?" I told them "well, the funeral director will take care of the body, and I'll take care of the family when I get my messages."

You're right, they make it so cheap and I must say, they are convenient. We're lettin' the leash out a bit more and for me, anyway, it's a safety issue. I like knowing I can contact him at any point. and then quickly became a master at typing with my thumbs, loved the uniqueness of being able to log on to the internet from anywhere, had a lot of fun with it, and remain eternally grateful that I didn't TELL very many people that I had gone to BB .... most just think it's a cell phone number. So many of my colleagues regret the fact that everyone knows they are instantly accessible via BB and I am so glad that I kept it quiet now that the initial thrill of it has passed.

hate em with a passion. That said, a polyphonic ringtone for "Run to the Hills" by Iron maiden is available, so that lightens the load a bit.

72. I don't even know my own cell phone number! |
|
I have the cheapest plan possible, just to have it for emergencies. I never keep it turned on. When someone asks me for my cell number, I have to say I don't know, because I really don't remember what the number is. I have to look it up in my rolodex. :hi:

74. I love having one for emergencies... |
|
and I've gotten to where I feel panicky if I don't have it with me...especially while driving at night. But, I only talk on it when absolutely necessary. I know people who I swear can't drive (or walk) without their phone stuck in their ear!

75. I don't like my cell phone either |
|
I just don't like to be that accessible. The biggest mistake was sharing my cell number with friends. I have one friend who will keep calling between my house number and my cell number until I pick up. Drives me nuts.

76. Change your numbers, then. Tell your friend it was because of |
|
a stalker, and therefore you're hesitant about giving out the new cell number.
And remember, Caller ID is your friend.

77. caller ID is a gift from the Goddesses |
|
She annoys me so much when she does that so I screen her calls out of spite. I need to just talk to her about because it's getting ridiculous. Changing my number is a great idea!

78. Or don't change the number, and just wear her out by never answering. |
|
It can work. Caller ID is one of the few "improvements" in telephone service that I actually like.
In fact, it's a necessity.
