I just watched Saturday Night Fever and have to say that
it is the most realistic story of a boy and a girl ever depicted in the movies. In virtually every other case where the relationship of the couple is the MAIN STORY it is pure fantasy. What I'm saying here is that there are other realistic depictions of relationships in movies, but not, in general, when it is the main story. Other elements of the movie may be pure Hollywood, but the relationship between Tony and Stephanie is so rooted in reality that it is almost painful to watch - and therefore VERY, VERY good.

1. Karen Lynn Gorney ( Stephanie ) was in the first mainstage musical
at the theatre where I work ( last October ) She seemed a bit phony in real life after talking to her, but a nice person, all-in-all. I agree with your assessment of the relationship aspect of it...and it had a great deal to do with the times

2. I shot a movie with (SNF director) John Badham a few years ago.
Sadly, he got pidgeon-holed into shooting "trend" movies much in the same way Travolta did after SNF. He hasn't done a major feature since Saturday Night Fever.

But he's pretty okay with that; he's basically retirement age, and in any event Saturday Night Fever made him a very wealthy man.

It's pretty interesting to hear him talk about making Saturday Night Fever; it was shot on a shoe-string, basically as a disposable summer flick starring a disposable teen idol; nobody had any idea what influence it would have on pop culture. Even the Bee Gees involvement on the soundtrack is because they hadn't had a hit in years and booking them was dirt cheap!

5. It sometimes has the feel of (very well done) TV
Which is not at all a bad thing.

3. The irony is that the magazine article upon which the movie was based
was later found to be mostly fabricated by the author, if I'm remembering correctly.
