which would you rather have: iPod or personal XM radio? |
|
I'm debating on whether to get an iPod or one of those portable personal XM radio/MP3 players.
I'm totally ignorant in the gadget department.
Thoughts?

And would never want to be without it. I don't have the tiny players though. Just the auto and home docking stations.

prime time. I got one of those XM2Go units and I only had it running for about a month before I got tired of it. The reception sucks, even when I was outside with the silly antenna extension on it. If they could get it right, it would be a great idea, but I found trying to get a signal on it a terrible distraction from the enjoyment of it.
I use my ipod a ton, with speakers in the office, with earphones, with the FM broadcaster in the car. Ipod just seems to be so much more useful.

Has both great satellite radio and an mp3 player in one. XM is going down, Sirius is the way to go.

Or at least iTunes and a comparable player...
There's even a cell phone that plays itunes files (pity it's a Motorola unit from Cingular, but the phone allows expansion and costs surprisingly little ($99 w/activation and contract)).
XM is so bloody expensive...

I work customer service for Cingular, and had a caller call in a few days ago to copmplain about how his cell phone deleted his mp3s on him, first thought that came to mind: Motorola SLVR uses iTunes, it's definitely a SLVR, because my iPod has done that to me numerous times.

6. I'd definitely go with an MP3 player (I have an ipod myself) |
|
I really wouldn't expect a sattlelite radio service to have a station that caters to my taste, and I've really come to like being able to listen to whatever's most perfect for my mood at the moment.
Also, I prefer to listen to a full album at a time rather than shuffle or radio sets, and having an mp3 player accomodates that quirk.

7. How much do you love your CD collection? |
|
If you're looking to expand your music, XM will turn you onto new stuff.
If you treasure your personal music collection, go with the iPod.
If I had to choose, I'd pick XM - there's enough variety where there's always something new and good you can find.
iTunes is good for buying new music, but those :30 clips don't cut it for me.

8. I was mainly thinking about XM for AAR listening purposes |

I'd love to be able to listen to Randi Rhodes, Rachel Maddow and Mike Malloy without being tied to a computer. I'd probably be happy with the music selection on XM.

xm+mp3. You can still add your own music, and have the content you desire from the radio. My friend told me that the Inno XM2go is actually pretty good, but I've never used one. I just tricked out my old PDA so it's a high capacity mp3 player now :D
The samsung ones look kinda cool too

Rucky said it well. When I want to listen to old favorites, I use my iPod. When I want variety, great stations, etc., I use my XM. I can't speak to the portable's reception, because I only use it outside, with no issues. I use a standard XM player inside.

Because besides your music selection, you can also download international Podcasts with any mix of international news and/or music that you want. There are not enough hours in my week to listen to all the good ones out there. I persnally prefer news Podcasts from ABC.au, BBC, & CBC becuase of the lack of good news domestically.
