What's your favorite 'Regular People, Sticking it to The Man' movie? |
|
Just thinking this because I am half-watching Erin Brokovich, as previously posted. I also like "It's a Wonderful Life", but I am thinking there must be others.

Good film about unionizing low paid factory workers. Sally Field was very good as Norma Rae.

It should be taught at schools... unfortunately, schools are more likely to teach classes like they do with math:
"If you have 1 bottle of cold, crisp coca cola and your friend gives you three bottles of cold, crisp coca cola, how many bottles of cold, crisp coca cola will you have?" (The answer really is 1, because people don't give away teeth-rotting soda pop. They drink it for themselves... but the student would have to answer '4'...)

And even though it's got one of the worst lines ever written for film and ever uttered on film. How in god's name did this NOT wind up on the cutting room floor?
"I am not steak. You can't just order me." :eyes:
Other than that, it was brilliant, hysterical, terrific.
Edit: Oh, and it's "Regular People, Sticking it to The Woman." Sigourney Weaver plays evil very well. ;)

Not exactly "regular people" but definitely a "Sticking it to the Man" movie. John Matuzak delivers the monologue that we've all dreamed of saying to our bosses: 'You're all chicken shit cock suckers.' Nick Nolte is brilliant and makes a valid point. Sometimes being a productive and loyal employee isn't enough. The Man still expects you to kiss his ass. Of course the Man didn't suffer much from Nolte's rebellion. Ah hell, the Man can't be stuck, he's too powerful. Maybe I should edit this and compose a rant about how Risky Business fits your criterion; but I'd rather go upstairs and drink beer I purchased from the Man while watching his TV programming.

(It's one of my favorites too!)
"So, you've been tellin' everybody I've been sleepin' with ya, huh? Well that explains it! That's why these people treat me like some dime-store floozy. They think I'm screwin' the boss! Oooh, and you just love it, don't you? It gives you some sort of cheap thrill like knockin' over pencils and pickin' up papers! Get your scummy hands offa me! Look I've been straight with you since the first day I got here, and I've put up with all of your pinchin' and starin' and chasin' me around the desk because I need this job. But this is the last straw! Look, I've got a gun out there in my purse. Up until now I've been forgivin' and forgettin' because of the way I was brought up, but I'll tell you one thing. If you ever say another word about me or make another indecent proposal, I'm gonna get that gun of mine, and I'm gonna change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot! And don't think I can't do it!!"

That movie is the ultimate. The regular guys are the main characters trying to fight for their self-determination, and 'the man' is the rest of society, which that movie characterized so well.
My favorite quote from that movie (hell, from any movie):
"They'll talk to you and talk to you and talk to you about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em."

34. An underrated one from the mid-80s |
|
Called Turk 182 with Timothy Hutton, Kim Cattrell, Robert Urich and Robert Culp.
Urich plays a fireman who is off-duty when there is a huge fire. When he is hurt during an off-duty rescue, the mayor (Robert Culp) refuses to give him his pension because he was off-duty. Hutton plays his younger brother who goes up against the mayor and his security department (led by Peter Boyle) to get justice for his brother.

Boon: Forget it, he's rolling. Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough... the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
Bluto: What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer... Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part. Bluto: We're just the guys to do it. D-Day: Let's do it. Bluto: LET'S DO IT!

The basic premise of the movie rocks. Fantastic idea, and great science fiction. But we were all rolling around on the floor when the Rowdy Roddy Piper character was fighting with that other guy in the alley about putting those special glasses on. I swear, that fight scene lasted 15 minutes, and it was just sooooo stupid. I mean, these two big guys beating the crap out of each other over something as simple as putting on a pair of sunglasses.

63. A really old cheesy one from the 80's |
|
But I love it all the same: "The Legend of Billie Jean"
This young white trash girl who happens to be really hot has a run in with rich assholes who own the auto dealership over her brother's (a very young Christian Slater) Faggio. She knees rich father asshole in the crotch, steals his money, and they all go on the run from the law, becoming folk heros in the process. Rich assholes try to get richer off the scandal by printing posters and other cheap plastic Wal-Mart type crap with hot girl's picture on it. She sees an old B&W Joan of Arc movie on the TV and cuts all her hair off halfway through the movie, becoming even hotter. At the end of the movie there's a showdown between rich assholes and hot girl. She knees both of them in the crotch again and sets fire to all the cheap plastic crap while Pat Benetar sings.
It's an awesome movie!
