Bands you didn't think you'd like, but ended up enjoying
Even if it's only a song or two.

I'll start it off:

The All Seeing I
Fantastic Plastic Machine
Cornelius
Fuzz Townsend
High Llamas
Nightmares on Wax
Coldcut
Sons of Silence

I just downloaded a soundtrack to my all time favorite TV show, and in reading up on the artists feature, I sort of rolled my eyes. But it's really super swell.

1. Green Day
and Franz Ferdinand.

The exceptions to my stubborn refusal to listen to any "new music".

12. Franz Ferdinand are fun.
Green Day I am not so fond of.

But writing off all new music is lame, you shouldn't do that.

14. Prove me wrong.
Seriously. During the school year, I listen to the "latest hits" EVERY FREAKIN' DAY on the bus, and I am forced to label all of it as lame.

17. And therein lies the problem.
You're not trying. You're just listening to the fucking radio and dismissing everything based on that. Try actually looking for good music, and you'll find it.

19. Green Day has been around for a pretty long time.
My stepbrother (12) was shocked when I (23) told him that I've been listening to Green Day since I was 11. Now he thinks they're "classic rock."

I was 9 at the time. And they had a couple albums before that if I'm not mistaken.

21. I saw them live, pre-Dookie.
They opened for the Doughboys and Bad Religion, and they, by far, kiked both headliners' asses.

26. I was the same way witih Green Day
when their first big commericial album came out (Dookie) I told a coworker that their music was future fodder for the Kmart Blue-Light special bin.

I was wrong and now I love their music, even seen them in concert.

6. Belle and Sebastian
I got one of their CDs because the catalogue described them as "Cure-esque". When I first played it I was thinking, "This stuff is too weird even for me", but it grew on me and I now have several of their CDs. (I don't think they're anything like The Cure though.

American Idiot was written in the same sense like Pink Floyd's "The Wall" where the music told a specific story.

10. Good question...
Coheed and Cambria, because of the Rush comparisons, and I'm not much of a Rush fan.
Alkaline Trio, because I heard part of "We've Had Enough" on Muchmusic and thought it sounded lame. They quickly grew on me though.
Fall Out Boy, because everyone hates them, haha. They're fun, so fuck everyone else.
Tegan and Sara, because when I first heard them I was a 15 year-old metalhead or something. Then I discovered that indie pop > heavy metal.
Arctic Monkeys because they were the indie buzz band for a while. Turns out it was well-deserved buzz.

There are probably more, but I'm lazy.

13. All American Rejects
There name is perfect for my state of mind, but their looks and actions (so cheerful) threw me. They seem so preppy and "acceptable," not reject-like. I saw them on PBS last night. After seeing and hearing that, they seem pretty cool. I wouldn't mind listening to them a little more.

Good for you! 'Luxury' is wonderful, as is their cover of Eurythmics' 'There Must Be an Angel...'

As for your question...Hmm.

The Killers
Lone Justice
Morcheeba
The Cult ('Electric')

I know there's a bunch more, but it's hot, and I don't feel like thinking.

29. Maybe
I remember thinking that the "grunge" music stuff would suck when I first started hearing about music from Seattle... then, Nirvana blew me away with "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

That's the last band I remember really exceeding expectations.

Another big one for me in the early 80s was Metallica. I saw them as an opening act in a club when they were promoting their "Ride the Lightning" album... having never heard their music, I had expected a band with a name like Metallica to be a cheesy or gimmicky lightweight heavy metal band. Boy, was I wrong about them.

32. This old fart saw the Butthole Surfers some years ago.
I remember thinking they weren't nearly as bad as I thought they'd be...

And I've got several other examples from Punk days. Snakefinger? Of course. And I first saw The Blasters in a "punk" setting. I'd never even heard of them & was jazzed hearing a band playing basic rock & roll.

My own musical tastes keep going back--to folks like Charlie Poole & the North Carolina Ramblers. But I'm certainly not fixated on the music of my youth. There were plenty of crapola bands back in the 60's & 70's.

And I do keep checking on what the young whippersnappers are up to.

31. I like it too
I surprised myself. I always liked that song "Wake me up when September ends". very touching song. So I listened to the whole thing. Never having considered myself a real fan of hard rock, I was surprised by how much I like. Now it is a staple on my MP3 player. I have sort of eclectic (or make that random!) tastes...mostly it's "alternative" country- Wilco/Sun Volt/Uncle Tupelo/the Jayhawks etc.

34. Pussy Galore.
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 11:00 AM by swag
In the mid-eighties, I always saw them in the listings for d.c. space (before they ditched the land of Dischord and headed to New York). I later learned why they never played the 9:30 Club from the woman who booked the 9:30. Story involving a stolen poptart, but versions vary.

Anyway, I just thought they would suck because of the James Bond association (Honor Blackman played "Pussy Galore" in Goldfinger). I thought they'd play that stupid twangy spy music type of thing. It turned out that they played something much worse. And I loved it.

And still do.

36. Mine (noting bands AND singers)
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 01:21 PM by mvd
System Of A Down. I'm not a metal fan (own a couple Metallica CDs and an Ozzy CD - and not much else,) and especially dislike nu-metal. But I enjoy System Of A Down.

Cheyenne Kimball and Brie Larson. I'm a big fan of pop/rock, loving Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, The Veronicas, The Faders, Guster, Nina Gordon, Leslie Mills, Bree Sharp, All American Rejects, Susan Cagle, The Jayhawks, Green Day (if you call it pop/rock,) The Corrs, The Like, Saving Jane, Pink, Halo Friendlies, Tuuli, New Pornographers, Some Girls, Lillix, and Lisa Loeb among others. But I thought these 15-year-old singers would water down pop even more than Ashlee Simpson, Jessica Simpson, Hilary Duff, and Lindsay Lohan did. Not so - these two teenagers impressed me. Not childlike like Emma Roberts, either.

Damone. When I heard they were bringing back 80s hair metal, I had my doubts. But it's much more than that, and their CD Out Here All Night is one of my favorites of 2006!

Sigur Ros. Thought they would be pretentious, but they make beautiful music.

Carrie Underwood. I was a Bo fan, but Carrie surprisingly made the better album. Some Hearts is not great, but it's tasteful pop/country.

The Fray - Was worried they'd be like newer Live and Nickelback, but they provide good soft rock.

I might think of more later, but I'm just posting this for now.

Kanye West - not a rap fan, but he has some enjoyable melody parts

Goldfrapp - not a big electronica fan, but they are good

BTW, Hope 7 needs to be added to my pop/rock loves list.. always some I forget.
