CNN/Reuters: Newly crowned Miss Universe faints
Newly crowned Miss Universe faints
Monday, July 24, 2006

Miss Puerto Rico Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza walks on the runway after being crowned Miss Universe.

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Forty minutes into her reign as Miss Universe, Miss Puerto Rico Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza collapsed during a post-pageant news conference and was rushed offstage Sunday night.

Pageant officials immediately said the lithe 5-foot-9 18-year-old was all right and had fainted.

"She's OK. She's fine," pageant representative Lark Anton told Reuters. "She got dizzy. It's very hot up here. Her dress is tight -- as you could see it was beaded and heavy. She passed out."

Anton said Mendoza "had plenty to eat today," when pressed for the beauty queen's condition before she fainted at the center of the stage at the Shrine Auditorium, where she had become the 55th Miss Universe before an international television audience less than an hour earlier.

Mendoza attended the pageant's Coronation Ball after recovering from her collapse, according to guests including Donald Trump, co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization. "Yes, she's fine," Trump said as he left....

1. Dr. Frist watched the pageant on TV & concurs, "she's OK!!"
"It was just the lights and the excitement," said Dr. Frist after viewing the pageant on TV. "I pronounce her in PERFECT health."

2. Mendoza "had plenty to eat today"
But did she eat anything the night of the contest? And how much of it did she throw up?

6. Having been on stage I would have to agree with the original
Prognosis. It is horribly hot on stage, and then throw in a *very* tight, very heavy costume, along with physical exertion and the emotions of the moment, I can easily believe that this is why she passed out.

Not every model is afflicted with an eating disorder:shrug:

10. I agree.
Pageant week is probably a 'temporary eating disorder' for most. I will venture as soon as the lovelies are knocked out of the contest they hurry backstage and devour pizza and eclairs :)

7. I once fainted on a stage during a play
granted..I was a 6th grader...but I was wearing a floor length costume and was portraying Thomas Edison's grade school teacher in the famous musical..."The Electric Sunshine Man"...(okay..don't laugh)...

The lights that were shining on us were so hot...and my costume was warm to begin with....and lo and behold...I passed out and woke up a bit later outside in a light rain...where the teachers thought I could cool down....hahahaha

12. They should strip her crown and give it to Miss Japan, the clearly more
beautiful one.

13. Miss Japan Lost That Crown All On Her Own
It was obvious that she didn't come into the contest a crowd favorite. Most probably had never seen or thought of her before. Yet she came in and won best national costume and was one of the most beautifull women there. Great body and poise, and facial expressions. She was dynamic. By the time the interview round of the final 5 started the crowd cheered for her more than anyone else it seemed. She was now the favorite.

Then she was interviewed. Her responses, partially her translator's fault I think, were odd. Unlike the other contestants, she asked to say something else in English and what she said sounded....flighty...loopy. Her second response to the second question was honest, though very poorly translated which made it seem darker and more violent than a safe answer.

If she had maintained her poise during the interviews and just given safe answers, I think she would have won. if anything this proves two things to me. The interview portion of the competition DOES factor in on who wins it (though looks and atitude whittle it down to the final five). The second thing it proves to me is that Miss Universe isn't supposed to be anything but a grinning she-idiot, and if she doesn't toe the line, speak only on cue, and only have vapid positive thoughts, then she probably won't win.

Anyway. My vote was for Miss Japan as well.

20. Here response about men's violence surprised me.
I speak fluent Japanese and was surprised by her answer.

It is unusual to hear Japanese women (or men) speak so openly about male violence.

The translator did fine with the translation IMO.

23. Ok
It just seemed like the translator was stumbling a bit, and reaching for words that sounded...harsher than necessary.

But yeah it was a pretty unusal statement, not just for a Japanese woman, but for one in a pagent. I was impressed by it, but felt that it was going to hurt her chances.

18. hint: the tallest finalist wins, as long as she can
walk properly in a gown (float versus march). Remember this & you'll astound your friends w/ your winner-picking abilities.
