Poll question: GoPsUx's thread made me wonder, do you post your info?
I've posted my pic and my general location but not my first name on the board generally. A very few people have my contact info.

People who post thier name surprise me, that just seems too likely to come back and bite one in the ass later.

What is your comfort level with personal info on teh intarweb?

2. Pics, sure. Name, no way.
A couple of times, some among the small handful of DUers who know my real name have posted it in reply to me. Innocent mistakes, they're *used* to calling me by my real name, after all, and yet both times, I had a mini-chernobyl of the brain about it and hastily PMed them begging for an edit. I have no idea how I square that paranoia with my casual willingness to post pics.

3. I've posted pictures and the city I live in.
Only a handful of people here know my real name, and even less know my contact info.

4. I understand being worried about identity theft and everything
Thats one reason why i only asked for a first name.
I've had a family tree webpage up for quite a few years that gives my entire name.
I honestly myself am not to paranoid about that.
Now giving phone numbers personal identification or street address. I would never do.
But to each his Own.
After one must look out for themselves :)

5. Maybe I'm not sufficiently paranoid
...which probably means they are out to get me... but unless one posted his/her information in a single post, a la:

My name is ____

I live in ________, __

Here's my photo:

...it seems to me the odds of that information being used to stalk me are rather staggering. First, I'd have to have a stalker. Second, they'd have to have tracked me to DU. Third, they'd have to comb through a lot of threads, or register to use the search function, to find the one post with all that information — or else spend a lot of time searching for individual threads. And since I have nearly 14,000 posts, it'd be the proverbial needle in a haystack.

I think the odds are in my favor.

8. Other than my pic
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 04:56 PM by u4ic
my general location and what flavour of ice cream I like best, I haven't posted much personal information.

I think I'm rather naive about these things, but like Rex I tend to think people have better things to do than search through and collect my (rather sparing) personal info.

edit: 3 or 4 have my email address and hence my real name - but I've built up trust with them.

10. I'm not very paranoid at all..
You'd have to be pretty damn resourceful to track me down by my first name, city/state and picture.

11. I think it depends on one's name and location, too.
For instance, a guy named 'Brian' who lives in metropolitan New York is going to be pretty hard to sort out from all the other Brians in that city.

But a guy named 'Agamemnon' who lives in Bumscratch, Ohio is likely to be the only Agamemnon in all of Bumscratch.

12. I've posted my pic but not my first name.
Oh, yeah, and general location ... and everyone knows I'm married to harleydad. A few DUers know my first name, and fewer have my email and phone numbers. But if I PMed them that much info, I either met them or hope to meet them. :D

15. Something interesting that happened here last week...
I posted a photo on one of the photo threads, had a conversation with another poster whose photo I commented on, and it turns out that we actually met in real life last year - before I even started posting here at DU - in a professional capacity.

Talk about a "small world" moment.

But, to answer the question, no, I never post my name.

17. Well, I may be liberal, but I ain't stupid
I have 3 generations of weapons and ammo in this house, and the knowledge and willingness to use them if needed.

I also have other protective measures in place.

So. No. I don't give a crap who wants to hurt me, because the likelihood is they will get hurt much, much more.

I'm a peacenik, but I ain't stoopid.

18. Live free or die...
One of the best and most powerful threads here was started right after the 04 elections... It was a "My name is..." thread, showing that we are real, and we are not afraid. It's never bitten me on the ass. Crap happens. One RWer tried contacting my boss (they googled my name to another board, involving my job) and asked him if he knew what I did on "his dime"... Funny thing is... he's a Dem (albeit Southern Dem) and I'm an independent contractor, paid by the job, not the hour. So much for doing their patriotic duty. That was a while ago. :D
