Nose piercing- yeah or nay? |
|
I wanted to get one at 18 (which was a good decade and a half ago), but I'm really thinking about this. A very small stone- diamond, birthstone maybe? I tend to look more conservative (*gasp)- a little Reese Witherspoonesque- so this is more of a big deal to my preppy geek self.
Whatcha think?

Yours looks culturally appropriate though. It would be a bit more startling on someone who looks like Reese Witherspoon.
Still, as far as piercings go, piercing a nose is one of the more attractive options.

But nose piercings are so common that someone who looks like Reese Witherspoon having a pierced nose wouldn't startle me at all. It's pretty common amongst women who you wouldn't normally think would get piercings anywhere but their ears.

The couple of times I got it done in high school they did it with a gun (which I do not recommend) and it didn't hurt. My right eye watered a little bit but it didn't hurt any more than getting my ears done. I recently got it redone (with a needle which I do recommend) on my left side and my left eye watered a bit but it still wasn't painful.
Edited to add that it closed both times I got it done in high school.

It may be just because I'm old, but piercings totally creep me out. If I see somebody with a pierced nose, or especially an eyebrow, lip, or tongue, I can hardly even look at them; it's the visual equivalent of chalk on a blackboard. Just -- eww. But I'm old, so don't listen to me.

|
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 01:38 AM by GirlinContempt
that a few people seem to have, namely that everything is about them? I mean, I know people in general are pretty self-focused, but last time I checked, not everyone does something for other peoples attention/approval/enjoyment. Sometimes, hard to believe I know, people do things that they like for their own reasons.
This whole idea that a piercing is about getting someone elses attention, or as stated down thread to say "i don't like you" (:wtf:) is just unfathomable. Unfathomable in the sense of "I can't believe you think you're really that important"

71. Um, I don't think body piercing is an element of either party platform. |
|
I am speaking not politically, but of my own aesthetic sense. I am not for banning body piercings, but they make me feel unfortable to look at. This is rather equivalent to saying - which is the case - I don't eat hot dogs; I don't like to look at people eating hot dogs, but I am not going to demand that others stop eating hot dogs.
I am not asking you to be like me and the words you attempt to put in our mouth's reflect a poorly matured mind. You are trying to add to an item of personal taste in appearance an accusation racism and an attitude toward family violence. In effect you asserting that an item in your personal vanity defines whether or not a person is moral. This is offensive and crude and frankly, a little egotistical. It does not happen that one needs to pierce one's tougue to demonstrate that one doesn't, believe in hitting one's children, for instance. Maybe your brains drained out when they pierced whatever it is you had pierced.
For the record, I am an ex-hippie, so I am familiar with how people join herds in the quest to declare themselves "different."

80. First of all, I don't go to DU meet ups. |
|
Second of all, I'm just squeamish.
When I see piercings, I think of the procedure. I usually avert my eyes. I don't like to look at it, OK?
Probably if I met you somewhere, I would tend to not look at you in the face when I spoke to you. Now, I'm not telling you to remove your piercings. If they make you feel whatever it is that you feel, that's your business.
I stopped going to the store because I'm squeamish. While I concede that it is not quite the same as having a swastika tattooed on one's forehead - and I've seen that - I didn't lecture the woman, and I'm not lecturing you. My reaction is nonetheless visceral, much like a fear of heights, or claustrophobia. You seem to think it's a matter of choice, or moralizing. It's not.
Now, since I don't attend them, I have no idea whether DU meet ups include bungee jumping, but yes, I do have acrophobia, except when skiing for reasons I don't really understand. Mind you, I don't mind if other people bungee jump, but I find their insistence that I enjoy looking at them annoying.

And odds are - at some point in your life - you might wish you hadn't so - whether or not it leaves a scar is a question to which you might want an answer before you decide.

39. Unless you have complications, then no. |
|
The complications can be avoided by going to a good piercer (NO PIERCING GUNS EVER, EVEN FOR EARLOBES) and using nickel-free jewelery.
I have my nose pierced and I just have a diamond stud in it. It's small enough that most people don't even seem to notice it (as in I had an employer who told me that all my earrings and tattoos were fine, but he didn't want me to get my nose pierced. I pointed it out to him and he was like, "oh wow, I didn't even notice. Yeah, that's okay.") When I take out the stud (pretty much never), the hole isn't noticable, unless you're looking for it. It'd be even less noticeable if I ever let it close up.

you do realize that everyone whose nose is not pierced always wonders if, when you get a cold, if snot comes out that little hole
the only thing i can say in favor of nose piercing is that the hole grows back once you get tired of, well, at least if you've had it only a few months it does
they're ugly and disgusting, so why do it, there are ways to say "i don't like you and i don't care about how i look" that don't involve snot
well, you did ask

I have 3 daughters and 1 son, all of them have had different colored hair (one had 13 colors at one time)at one point or the other, tattoo's, different piercings (three had the tongue piecing, two ended getting rid of it--in fact most of them are minimally pierced now, but like tattoos) Eyebrows, ears, lower lip, belly button (I have a friend from India who insists belly piercings mess with your Chakra)
A small one will give you an idea if you like it, and scarring should be minimal
Interestingly, my oldest daughter, who in outward appearance is more conservative, has the more "unmentionable" piercings.
Me, I'll stick with my so '80's multiple earrings.

I remember in 1990 (before body piercing was so common), I knew a girl with a nose ring and said, "That looks so beautiful. I'd love to do that.", but I never did. Aesthetic tastes are so personal, so blah to those who don't like it (I may find their hairstyle hideous for instance, so be it). I think they're pretty. I think I'm mostly curious to find out experiences of those who had them to make a decision once and for all.

I've never had a nostril piercing, but I have a septum, and I went to a reputable piercer about 8 years ago and have been very happy with it and had no problems.
Aesthetic tastes are very personal, but you've got to be prepared also for people like the ones in this thread, that are so hung up on something as little as a piercing they WILL judge you for it. Somehow my 80 year old grandmother could not only not care, but also stand up for me and my choices to the other old bettys in her block, but supposed mature adults are so 'distracted' by a bit of metal they can't even talk to you :eyes: or apparently, some will assume that you don't care about how you look (despite having spent time and money to look how YOU want to) and that you, somehow, dislike them, because apparently not only does everything you do with your body have to do with someone else, but it's their business to pass judgment on your choices and you as a person as a result.
Mostly people are cool, and if it makes you happy, do it. Just be clean and safe. Shop around.

I just got mine done two weeks ago, after wanting to for years. I love it. It didn't hurt. I don't know what these "Ewwww... snot... ewww... ugly" people are going on about. You have snot whether you have a piercing or not. You have to blow your nose whether you have a piercing or not. And, no, it doesn't come out the hole. Ignore the childish obsession with snot. The piercing makes no difference in that respect. As far as the whole jib about it's ugly/distracting/you-don't-care-how-you-look, that's just ridiculous and I'm disappointed to see that kind of knee-jerk prejudice on DU. Nose piercing has been a cultural norm for beautiful Indian women for centuries. (I'm not Indian, but I teach yoga and relate to that culture.) IT IS NOT distracting. In fact, I made a comment to an older woman of my acquaintance about "my new nose ring" and she said "Wait, haven't you always had that?" It's that natural. A teacher at the elementary school where my mom teaches has one. She's beautiful; none of the parents have commented. My partner's sister has one. She's beautiful; she's beating the guys away with a stick. And, hey, I think I look pretty good too. I don't know why people are being so harsh about this, and making such juvenile comments about the irrelevant snot thing. Get a pretty little jewel. They're subtle and flattering. Twice as many people will love it as hate it, and those who hate it are... well, haters. F' 'em.

Also, some advice: Asking for body modification advice/opinions here is not a great idea.

i have a small stud in one nostril and i absolutely love it. i still have people who ask me when i got it done (it was almost two years ago)
the diamond is a good idea, i've got one for when i have to dress up.
it didn't hurt much, just make sure to follow the aftercare instructions
as for having a cold, you don't even notice (just make sure there's nothing stuck in the screw after you blow your nose)

Especially if you're just getting a tiny stud. Mine healed up with no problems (took about a week) and even with my sinuses waging constant battle against me, my nose stud gives me no problems. It's small enough that a lot of people don't notice it and the hole is pretty invisible when it's out. Let's face it, it's pretty rare that someone is staring at your nose from six inches away.
Just make sure you go to a reputable piercer and that they use needles (not a gun). Guns are BAD for ALL PIERCINGS. Never use a "nose bone" style stud. Always use a nose screw. When you're healing, do not use bactine or anything like that. Either use plain dial or provone soap or sea salt. Sea salt is the best thing to use on healing a piercing. Mix a spoonful of non-idonized sea salt into a cup of water warm and soak your nose in it for a couple minutes (annoying I know, but it's the absolute best way to heal a piercing). Then, rinse it off and you're good to go. Sea salt is a natural disinfectant and it will draw everything out of the piercing. You're going to need to live it in for a good month before you can take it out for extended periods.
Feel free to ask me any questions. I have a bunch of piercings and spend some of my free time hanging out in the piercing place (I'm friends with my tattoo artist), so I'm pretty knowledgeable on it.

49. My mom got her earlobes pierced with a gun... |
|
and when she showed me, my reaction was, "You got it with a gun didn't you?" She said, "yeah" and I was like, "you fucking idiot. You know better. You've been around me long enough to know that piercing guns are bad..." She just turned to my stepdad and said, "didn't I tell you she'd react this way?" Gah!
My original earlobes were gunned and I had so many problems. I couldn't keep them. No problems with any of my needle piercings and I'm not the greatest with being regular about the aftercare. I just basically do sea salt soaks when I remember on a new piercing.

If I get it done in the next few days, is it possible to take it out (for work only) in three weeks? Is that enough time to heal? I work in medicine and we have "official policies" about it. Not a problem if I have a piercing, but I can't wear the jewelry at work.

77. It's possible. It really depends on the person. |

Honestly, I think you'd run into problems. Most likely, not being able to get it back in. They do have piercing retainers that will hide it effectively and they won't fall out. Here's one: http://www.tribalectic.com/s-custom.asp?SType=Nostril+Retainer&MainType=Retainers&Material=Stainless+Steel+%28Primary%29#Use some flesh-toned nail polish on the flat disc part and they're almost totally invisible.

and wear it for a while to see if you really like the look of it. If so, then get the real thing. :toast:
I wore magnetic studs on my ear lobes when trying to decide if I wanted the 2nd & 3rd holes.

76. Do as you wish... (Cautionary tale included) |
|
However, I'd never do it due to the fact I once had a Hamster...
He would fight with the other Hamsters whenever he got the chance. During one of his battles his foe bit through the upper part of his nose...
From then on, when he breathed there would be this whistling noise. I remember laying in my bed late at night for years hearing this...
"wheeee... wheeee... wheeee..."
There you have my story of why I'd never get my nose pierced.

Like anything else fashion related, it depends on the individual, the style you choose, and how you wear it.
