Do I really need a box spring? Furniture shopping help needed
I'm buying a new bed. I was looking into getting a platform bed, but the bed I want turned out to be a regular one, that supposedly needs a box spring. Can I get away with not buying one? I already have a mattress and a feather bed, will not sitting on a box spring make a big difference?

1. the box spring provides extra height and support under the
mattress, helping in more even weight distribution.

You don't want tohave to change sheets on a bed that is too low to the ground, all that bending over is unpleasant.

2. the height isn't an issue
but support would be. I might try wooden slats, do you think it would help?

3. Platform beds are really popular in Europe.
And they're damn attractive too!

4. I wanted a platform bed,
but the bed I fell for turned out to not be :( . I was hoping that I could still go box spring free, even though the bed wasn't designed to be used that way.

5. Yes, but you don't need to buy the one that comes with the set.
It's usually cheaper to buy a cheap-ass box spring, if they let you. Sometimes they price it like one-way plane tickets.

7. If the bed is the kind with just a couple slats, then you'll want a box
spring.

Otherwise the mattress will slip down at a levelk lower than the slats, and be very uncomfortable.

Personally, I just put my futon on the floor. That's all I need - good support all the way around, without all the expense, and without that gigantic bed taking up so much room and looking so awful in the space.

Or, you could also just get some plywood and put that over the slats, and put the mattress on that.

8. thanks
I'v had the mattress on the floor, but I like to store suitcases under my bed, the mattress on its own is just taking up space.

11. I also have a matress on the floor.
Recently we upgraded to a futon on a matress on the floor. Still very comfortable, with a tiny bit more height, but, we have to push the futon back into position on a nightly basis. Sometimes I wonder if the little bit of extra comfort is worth it.

Either way, I won't pay for a frame.

9. I have a platform bed...
with wooden slats and no box spring. It is a bit harder than I was used to, so I bought a fluffy feather bed pad to put on top of the mattress...now it's totally comfortable.
