UPDATE: regarding reyd reid reed's daughter ...
I have R's permission to post this private message she sent to me. This is all the information that's available at this time. Please, keep those good vibes going.

Kesha, I'm hearing back from the messages I left all over town yesterday but it's just more of the same. Can't. Won't.

*sigh*

I've sent all the information I have, as well as her picture, to the people that Lizzie Grace put me in touch with last night.

Keep a good thought.
Whenever I'm feeling discouraged or frustrated, you lift my spirits. Whenever I don't know where to go or what to try next, there's a suggestion.

Thank you just doesn't feel like enough...but it's all I have right now.

Thank you.

Lisa.

to the same age isn't she?

I can't imagine her pain either. We just really need to be supporting her in any way we can.

More news later, and hopefully it will be good news.

I cannot begin to imagine what she's going through. The fact that she can't get anyone to help search for her daughter is just pure insanity. I'll post again when I have more. Lisa'a so busy, and she's just overwhelmed, so it's hard for her to keep things updated here.

16. When I was in San Antonio last spring, there was a young white
girl panhandling in the tourist district along the Riverwalk. She had a story about running away with her boyfriend to his aunt's house and then getting kicked out of the aunt's house. I gave her $5 and told her to call home. For all I know, this was a local kid having a good time conning out-of-towners. On the other hand, maybe her story was true. I guess the point is that there are lots of stupid kids out there doing dangerous things. Then there are the 'throw-aways", teenagers who for one reason or another end up leaving home/ getting kicked out because their family is broken. This thread has given us all a look at someone going through a nightmare. (For the record, I have a sister who was responsible for a lot of gray hair in her time, so I would never blame the parents for a runaway. If ever there was proof of free will, it is teenage behaviour!) Anyways, after Sarah comes home, let's all remember this and look around in our own towns and cities to ensure that we are protecting all teenagers, not just our own.

18. Very well said, hedgehog. We must remember how
sensitive they are in everyway. During the teenage years they learn a lot about the examples set by the adults around them- whether from a teacher, someone they work with or at home. They take what they observe around them and mirror it in their adult lives- acts of kindness, standing up for others, or whatever.

22. I just had this idea... (and it couldn't hurt)
Call the local cab/bus companies- Greyhound and the like- and find out how far $15 will get you (I think that's the amount mentioned). You might also ask for the $20-30 range. It isn't much, but it could be a starting point. Asking people at bus terminals if they've seen your daughter could also give some leads.

Hope you find her soon, RRR.

36. If you live in the community, you don't even have to ask.
Copy the published rates from the door on the cab if they're shown, or hail a cabbie and explain what you're trying to do. Cabbies are much more likely than the cab company to help you out because they want the fare. Then slip'em a few bucks.

Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 04:20 PM by notmyprez
I don't know RRR's family situation, but since the girl's father wasn't mentioned, I'm thinking they might be divorced. Could she have gone to stay with her father, for some reason? (And could he have paid people off to not help find her?)

I apologize if I'm being untoward, but I figured I should offer up the thought.

Thirteen year old girls just are NOT that good at "keeping secrets". Her "best friend" must know SOMETHING. . .

I mean, in the whole town, NO ONE is willing to help? :wtf: I mean, Colo. Springs isn't the smallest of cities, or is it just full of assholes? Maybe I'm just suspicious, but I find it outrageous that no one in the whole place would be willing or able to help reyd reid reed out with a *missing* *child.* I wish there was something I could do to help, but I don't even know anyone in the area, closest I have is a friend in Fort Collins. :(

56. I don't know the full situation
Were there any family problems preceeding this event? Is this sort of thing completely out of the blue or the sort of thing that seemed like it could have happened and finally did?

If there were family fights, she could have decided to stay with friends and they're standing behind her on this decision. If she was planning on meeting someone from the net, that would explain the remote so she could get back in at night.

Is she a vindictive person? Is she the sort who would deliberately try to twist the knife? The whole story about the police refusing to cooperate seems unreal. It's been more than 48 hours, they still won't take a missing persons' report? How did we determine she took a cab? The police won't follow up on that lead now that she's been missing for days?

If the police won't handle this, call the media. They'll make a big stink.

One of my daughter's friends was 'missing' very similarly to Sarah and the mom put the word out to the friends' moms. It worked. I would be you $1000 that the moms don't know that Sarah is missing, unless I have missed something.

Amazing how loyal they are when it doesn't matter. :eyes:

imagine keeping a child in my home without trying my damndest to find out why she isn't at her own house with her family. I know kids can be creative and good liars too. But geez ... parents need to dig deep and try to see what's really going on.

Thanks Midlodemocrat, your support is so appreciated.

58. agreed
Seems insane that parents would cover for her like that. I could see parents covering if a kid was trying to escape from a bad family, a really bad situation. But if it's a kid having normal family problems and needing space, you'd think a responsible parent would let the other family know she needs some space for a few days before going back. The only way I could see her staying at a place and nobody fessing up would be if these are 18+ people living on their own, like a bunch of roommates sharing a house or something. It wouldn't be unheard of for a 13 year old to have friends or friends of friends who would have such a place to crash at. So again the question is "how well do you know her friends?"

67. Folks, it's going on FIVE nights now since Sarah was home...
I spoke with RRR on the phone earlier and to say she's worried is an understatement. I don't know how she's managing to hold up as well as she is. It must have something to do with all the good thoughts here.
The late nights and early mornings are very hard on her. When it's quiet and she has too much time to sit and think and isn't able to sleep. Please remember her in your prayers, your thoughts, your hearts.

Let's hope that Sarah is home tonight, safe and sound.

:yourock: DU, I'm proud to be associated with all of you.

My daughters pulled some shit when they were teens, but DAMN, 5 days! That sucks. My heart goes out to her.
I hope she calls and lets her mom know she's okay. It's so hard to raise girls these days...and boys, for that matter.
My baby boy just turned 18 and I worry about him too.

80. There isn't a lot to report really...
The police are dragging their butts. They have a small lead but if it dries up they are back to square one.
We keep hoping she'll just show up at home!

She's been gone so long now it's getting scarier by the hour. How does a child just disappear off the face of the earth? Further, how do people of authority NOT do something when it comes to a minor.
Lisa is doing as well as can be expected, she's frantic, trying to stay busy, chasing leads, hoping and wishing, just wanting her daughter to come home.

 I find it hard to leave the computer, I keep waiting to hear good news.

 But a small lead is better than no lead. Yes, it would be great if she would just show up at home.

What a sad time. I doubt there's a parent anywhere who can't relate to the horror ... either from having gone through it or imagining going through it. I don't have a clue why the authorities aren't all over this. It's pretty damn stupid that they can't see how a possible runaway situation can turn into something else.

I'm sure Lisa is frantic. This whole thing is just so frightening.

I'm hoping and praying for good news soon. Thanks for keeping us updated. :grouphug:

98. I've been trying to keep up with these threads.....they are
just heart wrenching. I don't have kids of my own, but I can tell you from about 13 until 18 I was a mother's worse nightmare (my poor mom....she didn't deserve the grief I caused).

My guess is she has found a group of 18+ to hang with. Friends her age really might not know who they are if they (the older crowd) befriended her recently.

At any rate, is there anyway rrr can try to get a warrant herself (to obtain information from the cab company). It is surreal to believe they won't be forthcoming but since they are not can she go to family court herself and have one issued?

If it were I, I would start telling the cops she was abducted. Start using different langauge. Call the FBI and tell them she has been abducted. RRR needs to put aside any qualms. Yell, Fire.

86. A teenage girl from my NJ town ran away
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 10:09 PM by latebloomer
a couple of months ago. The police got involved immediately, though it was clear she'd had an argument with her parents and left of her own volition. They did some sleuthing and she was found a couple of days later, hiding at some older kids' house.

I think RRR needs to raise hell and keep going up the chain of command till she gets the police to assist her.

All positive thoughts and visions for Sarah's quick return--

87. A suggestion
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 10:12 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
Sometimes kids run away because they think it's "romantic" to be on their own, and by the time reality sets in, they don't want to go home because they're afraid that their parents will reject them.

It's possible that this girl ran away, took up with some street kids (who distrust authorities on a gut level), and is now (in her emotional adolescent way of thinking) afraid to come home.

Is there a shelter or program for street kids in Colorado Springs? Could you contact them and have them circulate her picture among their clients, emphasizing that she will be welcome back home, and that she should at least phone and alleviate her family's worries? The staff of the program or shelter will also know where street kids hang out or the locations where they crash at night.

If she is on the streets, it's important to get her home as soon as possible, before she gets acculturated to that subculture, but it may be hard to find her, due to the kids' unwillingness to tell on one another.

103. I'm sorry
I haven't been here and updated...and aA...you're truly an angel. As is everyone else here.

She still isn't home...but...and there is a 'but'...I got a call tonight from someone whose daughter knows the guy that Sarah was wanting to see...that we believe she's with. We have two new phone numbers to look into, the name of a roommate, and a place of employment.

This is more information than we've had since this whole thing started.

The girl who knows this guy is going to try and get a good address...we thought that we might have had one...but apparently they moved a month or so ago. My oldest son went out there to check (couple that live there was probably tickled pink to see my kids at their door at close to midnight)...but we're just beginning.

I called the police with the new information...would you believe they transferred me to a VOICE MAIL??? They quit at 5 p.m.???? Just when I think I've seen the lowest that the police department in this town can sink...they come up with a new one.

Don't ever have a problem here.

They did get more actively involved today, though. I got a call from a different officer...one who mentioned getting an e-mail...who verified all the information that I had already given them and then asked for more. She called back later today...saying, "I'm trying to located a missing girl named Sarah Heaver." "This is her mother." "Oh. I guess...how did I? Oh. Well." Then she told me that they were getting some cooperation from the cab company. Apparently she was picked up in the neighbor's driveway at 3:31 Saturday morning...but she was waiting on the address.

What else is new?

She did say that if the address didn't turn anything up, they were back to square one...if they'd gotten to the damn address sooner....then...

Shit.

But that was before I got the calls I got tonight.

I'm trying to track the phone numbers...keep your fingers crossed. Maybe the end is in sight.

You are all the BEST.

123. My son's girlfriend
did something similar. He had broken up with her and she was trying to get back at him. He finally found her on line in chat and got her address where she was. He asked me if he could go get her and I said no, that her parents needed to pick her up. I talked to her and asked her if I could contact her parents (which I was going to do anyway, but I thought it would be best to get her permission if I could).

By this time she was afraid to come home but we worked out that her dad would pick up my son and go get her together. I understand how it feels to know she is out there, but where. I pray all not only works out, but it does so soon.

129. How old is the guy? Wouldn't the police be interested in that aspect?
I can kinda, sorta, maybe understand their relative indifference to a teenager who leaves home willingly for a few days. I imagine that if police departments tracked down teenagers who ran to friends' houses without permission, that is all they would do.

But if a 13-year-old is shacking up with an adult, well, that strikes me as another kettle of fish.

Particularly, since my experience is any adult involved in a situation like this probably has a record...or outstanding warrants...or unpaid traffic tickets...or some reason to get the police to their door.

128. I keep checking these threads, and the tears always come
for RRR, and her daughter, and the pain RRR must be going through. I have a 14 year old daughter who is asleep downstairs in her room, but I know this could just as easily be her. She's a good kid, as I'm sure Sarah is too, but they are so young and sometimes so stupid.

I remember that feeling when she was a newborn, when I would check to make sure she was still breathing every 30 minutes at night, just panicked about how I would keep this tiny little creature alive day after day. Once they get a little bigger that feeling goes away, but now that she's a teenager all those feelings are coming back...how do I keep her safe?

I'll continue to pray for Sarah's safe return....Sending love, RRR....

134. As of this morning
There's been no decision made that way. There are those of us who are ready to jump in and work on it if and when Lisa and her family decide to go that route.

The longer Sarah stays away, I THINK the harder it will be to find her. This situation is becoming quite frightening.

149. Latest Information I have ....

So far nothing new. I'm back to waiting on phone calls. I'm on my way out in a few minutes to put out more flyers. And I've e-mailed the flyers to people all over town and talked to the people from beyondmissing this morning...and they're already working on it so I really am encouraged.

Now if people would just pick up the damned phone.

*sigh*

So, who knows what could be going on behind the scenes. Beyond Missing is working on things, that gives us some hope.

More when I have it. And thank you to all who are sending me messages and keeping this kicked.

157. OMG, what a terrible situation. Will Nancy Grace on TV run her picture?
I don't know if it's too soon or what the parameters are for her program.

What about John Walsh on "America's Most Wanted"? Does he just post pictures of felons, etc. or children, too?

Larry King sometimes does these missing children, too. But he may be on vacation.

Sorry, I have no email addresses and have to rush on to something else that's less important, but due, nevertheless.

Also, have you tried to contact her school (even though it's closed for the summer)? They might have a secretary there or the principal checking in. Perhaps you can even do a telephone chain or whatever they call them, if you can get telephone numbers of classmates, friends, etc.

I'll keep thinking.

If you need me, please PM. I do a radio program in Oregon, but it doesn't reach Colorado (except via computer).

I'll be looking and listening for some good news.

158. Here's the latest — and it's not good
I'm on the phone with Lisa right now. She found out where the cab took Sarah — to the mall.

A cab took a 13-year-old girl to a mall at 3:30 in the morning.

The real bitch is, she obviously met someone there, or at least planned to. The big question now is, and went where from there?

Damn. Just... damn.

170. From the Center for Missing and Exploited Children Homepage
http://www.missingkids.com/

National Center for Missing & Exploited Children

Act immediately if you believe that your child is missing.

* If your child is missing from home, search the house checking closets, piles of laundry, in and under beds, inside old refrigerators—wherever a child may crawl or hide.

* If you still cannot find your child, immediately call your local law-enforcement agency.

* If your child disappears in a store, notify the store manager or security office. Then immediately call your local law-enforcement agency. Many stores have a Code Adam plan of action—if a child is missing in the store, employees immediately mobilize to look for the missing child.

* When you call law enforcement, provide your child's name, date of birth, height, weight, and any other unique identifiers such as eyeglasses and braces. Tell them when you noticed that your child was missing and what clothing he or she was wearing.

* Request that your child's name and identifying information be immediately entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Missing Person File.

* After you have reported your child missing to law enforcement, call the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children on our toll-free telephone number, 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678). If your computer is equipped with a microphone and speakers you may talk to one of our Hotline operators via the Internet

I hope to God RRR has done these things. . .

known victim and known (or identified) abductor. When all this started, she had willingly left her home in a cab.

The Amber Alert organization has a specific purpose under the law.

somewhere to pick up the car. At that hour, there wouldn't be many cars around.

DOn't know what to say. This could mean so many things, some of them hopeful. Why the damned cops didn't find out about the mall on Saturday is beyond me.
