Bird owners - a female red canary. Worth buying?
She's a clearance special, but they've been trying to sell her for a long time and she looks depressed. And they haven't any males either to make her happy.

Not that I have the money anyway, but maybe by Friday...

1. I don't know about birds
but it sounds like she needs a home. :(

2. Mine wouldn't be a good one...
She needs a special friend...

And I may not have one for much longer.

3. It depends on what you want from the bird.
If you want a bird to hang out with you and be playful, then no. Get a parakeet or a cockatiel, if you want something small, inexpensive and playful.

If you want a bird that will look pretty and flit about in it's cage, then yes. If you want her, then get her. Personally, I like birds that I can play with, but some people like to have ones mostly to look at. Honestly, I'm a sucker for animals, so if she was around for a long time and on clearance looking all depressed, then I'd probably buy her.

Then again, the only reason I ever had finches was because my friend was mistreating hers, so I bought the three pairs and their flight cage for $25. They weren't fun birds, but they were pretty cute and I saved them for pretty squalid conditions.

4. I've got a Senegal parrot already; the canary would
just be in a nice roomy cage, chirping, and looking happy. With a little canary birdie bed buddy. Try typing that when you're drunk...

She is gorgeous to look at; but given I've seen her at that store so many times, only to leave and later come back (she had a broken leg at one point too), she may be too stressed out to live a proper, happy life.

6. Cool. I like senegals.
If you want her and you feel you'd give her a better life, then get her.

I miss not having birds.

5. she won't sing but she can still be a good companion

it is unlikely that, as a female, that she would ever sing, however, if she responds to you and you like her color, enjoy

there is a powder you can use to sprinkle on her food to maintain color

you can always watch the classified ads and get a male later to serenade her as you can afford it

have some noise in the house when you can't be there, such as music or a canary song tape, for her to listen to, or if her office is cool w. birds at the office might want to bring her along

canaries are super easy to care for, although i always owned them in pairs and just sold my extra babies

if you do get a male and don't want them to have chicks, there are fake eggs so you can take away the real eggs and let her sit on the fakes until the urge passes

but they are really very little trouble at all

females should be sold at a substantial discount, at least when i was raising them, they were, but i'm no longer up on current prices so your ability to bargain the price may vary -- considering that she's a return and has a bad leg, i would talk frankly to the pet store owner and explain that while your finances are limited, you would be willing to provide her a good home if you got a really decent price -- couldn't hurt?

7. Do you want to breed her, or just want another bird?
Canaries aren't particularly interactive and don't like to be touched unless raised with frequent handling.

8. Depends on whether you want a female red canary or not,
doesn't it?

9. This would depend on whether you live in a coal mine.
