Update on my husband
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x5412526#5414093

He is still pretty sick but better today. He had a great day. He ate for the first time since Saturday. His temp was normal all day. The nurses came in and looked at his wound and it looked nasty to me but they said it was looking better.

Then at 7:30 tonight, his temp spiked up again. Right after that, the infectious diseases doc came in to see him. With the temp spiking up while he was there. So of course he can't come home tomorrow.

And his dip shit boss called and said he needed to come to the office and fill out paperwork so they can file the workers comp claim. Which part of hospitalized do you suppose the asshole doesn't understand? He also hasn't bothered to come by to see him. I don't remember if I mentioned this in my post yesterday but when he got hurt, the boss told the guy he works with to take him to the ER and then when they got there, the boss called and told the other guy to go file an incident report and then get back to work. NO ONE CALLED ME. So my husband sat in the ER for 6 hours ALONE. I called his union today and they want him to file a formal complaint with human resources. I also emailed an attorney (a DU friend:) ) to get a name of a workers comp attorney.

My boss came by to see him. Hubby and I both work for the same employer. My boss said it is "disgraceful" the way his boss is treating him. She didn't advise him to file the complaint with HR but she admitted we had every right to be very angry. She did say that she had talked to one of the top brass (second in command) and that woman is supposedly going to call us to apologize. Of course I know better than to hold my breath waiting for that phone call.

No wonder people file 'frivolous' lawsuits.

6. He fell off a roof at work on Friday morning
and sliced his shin on the way down - to the bone. He banged his leg on the edge of the ladder that he missed. He was trying to get away from a nest of wasps on that roof.

The ER stitched it up, even though there was no flesh to stitch. It got infected within 24 hours and he is in the hospital on IV antibiotics. He is very very sick. He has an antibiotic resistant strep infection.

They say it will be at least 3 months before it heals and maybe as long as a year.

And his boss is a dipshit. :)

Thanks for the hug.

18. I read yesterday's post. Very glad he's doing better.
Especially as you described him as healthy and strong, it must have been very frightening to see him so ill. May the next few days bring further improvement! I know they will.

2. I'm glad he had a good day !
I found when I had TS syndrome my temp spiked at night as well. The infectious disease Dr didn't seem alarmed by that.
I'll continue to hold good thoughts for your husband and for you. Please get good rest and don't forget to eat and drink! You need to stay healthy :)

11. Thanks Maestro
He works for the same school district I do. He is in maintenance and they are scrambling to clean up for the start of school. He had to go up on this roof to remove gang grafiti (SP?). Damn gang bangers.

We also have a new supt. He has been on the job 2 weeks. So all the top dogs are covering their asses to keep their jobs. I will be interested to see if this asst supt bothers to call me. My principal called her today and read her the riot act for the way my hubby's boss has treated him. I am still just LIVID that they basically dropped him off at the ER and didn't bother to call me. Hell, they all know me and know exactly where I am. It is only a 4 digit phone call!!

My principal is pretty angry too. She lost a summer school teacher for the last week of summer school and there are no subs.

I hope your husband gets better soon and I hope you get some downtime. Relax. You will have kids soon.

Hang in there. Sounds like he is getting better. I swear, when employees get hurt, or sick, employers change their tune fast. Suddenly, you're the enemy. Glsf you're gettomg a lawyer.

24. Wishing the best for your husband and his recovery.
I also found the link to the Kansas Workers Compensation site. I don't know if it will help you or not, but thought I would pass it on to you. I am a voc rehab counselor in Washington State, and deal with people injured on the job. The laws are different in every state, but reading some of the site, it seems that many of the WC rules in Kanas are very similar to those in Washington. I'm glad you are getting an attorney; he or she should be able to help you and your husband navigate through the system. Also feel free to PM me if you'd like. Again, Kansas law is a bit different than Washington law, but if I can help in any way, let me know.

Here's the link to the WC site:

but live in KS. Thanks for the link though.

MO workers comp is different and I know they just changed it cause everyone is talking about how bad it is now. Repukes have taken over MO and changing the workers comp law is just one of many nasty things they have done.

28. It's not uncommon for temperature to spike 24 to 48 hours
after starting antibiotics. It doesn't mean the antibiotic isn't working. Glad your husband is better. You should sent a letter to his boss stating that he can't come in to fill out paperwork as requested until he is released from the hospital. (Just to document). You might even mention when would be a convenient time for his boss to come by and obtain a statement from husband. And file the complaint - the next person injured on the job might not by as lucky as your husband.

30. If I might make a suggestion, get a work comp attorney through his union
Edited on Wed Jul-26-06 01:04 AM by nothingshocksmeanymo
The attorneys that represent the unions are usually the best work comp attorneys and you don't want your husband to be a) screwed by an incompetent lawyer or b) restricted out of a job unless he really can't do it anymore.

Furthermore, it is IMPERATIVE that if ANY other part of his body hurts besides his leg i.e. his back, neck or anything else, that it get reported NOW rather than later.
Oftentimes when people are injured they deal only with the most immediate problem. Then the insurance company challenges them on their other injuries since they weren't reported immediately.

I doubt he even had serial xrays of any other body part in the ER since they were dealing with the open wound. If ANYTHING else hurts report it now and have xrays at a minimum done while he is still in the hospital. Certain soft tissue conditions are noted on plain xrays.

Finally make CERTAIN the attorney has dealt with cases wherein his/her clients have suffered opportunistic infections. This is something one would NOT want to settle immediately as MRSA can occur over and over if not totally resolved the first time. So the last thing you want is a doctor finalizing his medical status only for a recurrence to happen/

For the record, this is my business and what I do every working day of the year - so I've got over two decades experience with these issues.

Best wishes to your husband.

They did do xrays of his leg in the ER the day he got hurt. But I will ask about other tests today. Good point. He has been bedridden for 5 days so it would be hard to tell if anything else is hurt.

31. Please please please please please get a worker's comp lawyer
to handle this for you... the co you work for has lawyers, so you should too.

Do NOT depend on WC and your employer to look after your best interests in any way, shape or form.

A WC lawyer doesn't charge you one single penny up front and will guide you through your claims process making sure your husband gets the best possible care and settlement.
