A popular DU'er posted a call out thread against me in GD completely misrepresenting some of my posts, and without reading my posts, 100+ DU'ers responded calling me names. The last of them was my friend from college who introduced me to DU, and finished the thread neatly by calling me a "fuckwit troll" or some-such (having not read the thread that was being complained about, he had no idea it was me. I've never told him about it).

For days, I was completely hurt and miserable. Then I got over it, myself, and those people.

Realizing that those ignorant, rude, and hurtful comments don't really matter was liberating and strengthening. No longer fearing superficial damage to my reputation, I became less of a coward.

Furthermore, nearly half of those people who followed the link and read what I really said began defending me vigorously in both threads, even as some of them debated against me in the original. That eliminated the temptation to write off all DU'er as fools.
