Agh! How do vegans do it?
We're out of cheese, people. No. Cheese. Now, my parents are vegetarian (not vegan), so I've suppressed my meat cravings when I'm at home and indulge when I go out, but hell, I'm used to that, but I guess I forgot to put cheese on the grocery list so when my dad did the food shopping last night, he didn't get cheese.

No cheese!! WAAAAH!! Where's my substantive food? No meat, OK, hell, I'm used to that, but not cheese...please, anything but that!!

Come back to me, cheese, I love you!! :(

1. I'm mostly vegan now. I used to crave cheese.
I used to eat hunks of it. After a few days, the cravings go away.

My body type and metabolism doesn't permit me to live on vegetable products alone...after a while I start to go into hibernation.

Edit: we're also out of pasta. x(

9. It's about calories.
Per calorie, vegetables have more nutritional value than most other foods. You just need to eat more (by weight) to get the same number of calories.

If you feel like you need protein/fat, try nuts or a pb sandwich.

I think it's not just cheese, we're pretty much out of everything. Apparently my dad doesn't need to eat, so next time my mom's out of town and I'm here, I'm doing the groceries.

13. I tried it once.
I couldn't pull it off. Ovo-lacto I did for years, and I could easily go back to it and often unconsciously do for months on end. Vegan I can't pull off, especially when there's things like eggs and cheese in the house. I think it's because I was raised Hindu, which is damn impossible to do without milk.

I have enormous respect for vegans, but I can't do it. At least not at this stage of life.

25. Actually, our cats
eat meat (cat food). Allegedly, there are vegetarian (even vegan) cat foods. I just don't know how long they've been studied. Cats, as honest to goodness carnivores get meat around here.

All the dogs here are vegetarian, though.

Turned out she was blind due to severe protein deficiency.

She lived for several years after I had her though. Maybe cause I put her on a high-protein diet after I found out why she was blind? Dunno...

56. The lack of protein wasn't the cause.
The lack of taurine was. Unfortunately, synthesized taurine just doesn't do the job. Cats like lots of things...including grasses and grains but obligate carnivores get no nutrition from them. They're only good for preventing constipation and helping get rid of hairballs.

Getting that kitten back on the diet she needed is what kept her alive. And when kept in an environment that doesn't change much, blind animals do quite well.

39. Most feed them a standard diet.
I've always fed my cats regular cat food. Hell, tonight the cats ate venison cat food. Even when I had my python it got fed mice. Animals have their requirements and I feel if someone is uncomfortable with that, then they shouldn't have that animal. Personally, I don't feel it's safe to feed a cat a vegetarian diet. They are complete carnivores by nature. Dogs are naturally omnivores and can do well on a vegetarian diet. I've never had a dog on a vegetarian diet, but it's healthy for them.

18. Cheese is addictive
There's a substance in it called casomorphins that trigger the same pleasure receptors in the brain as opiate drugs like morphine and heroin. So that's the bad news. The good news is that if you don't eat it for a few weeks, you break the cycle of addiction, the cravings go away and it looks and smells like the nasty coagulated pus that it is.

Ice Cream has the same effect on me, even more so. So do grains. If I don't eat any of them, I feel better after a while and have more energy and eventually don't even crave them. But once I pick it up again, I find it difficult to stop.

only of the hypocrisy of it.

But, if you do not eat anything that has (or had) a mother, how do you reconcile this with the studies into MITOCHONDIRAL DNA of yeast...the dna that is only passed from the -mother-?

58. Yeast is a monocellular fungus.
It does not have the capacity to feel or to suffer. Nobody questions this with mushrooms and other more organized fungi, but the yeast thing comes up a lot, apparently because some people napped through biology or think vegans did.

I don't know what you think the presence or lack of mitochondrial DNA has to do with anything. Yeast is a single-celled organism. It reproduces by dividing. It only has a mother in the sense that a mother cell splits off into two daughter cells, (although yeasts also reproduce by budding sometimes I really don't want to start a yeast reproduction tangent.)

Veganism is centered on the idea of reducing to the greatest extent possible animal suffering caused by one's diet and lifestyle. There is no conflict with this ideal and the consumption of yeasty breads as yeasts are neither animals nor capable of suffering.

61. No hypocrisy to be had there.
Having or not having had a mother is not part of the definition of veganism. Your interpretation is based on tying studies of mitochondrial DNA of a fungus to a metaphorical desciption of veganism.

Seriously, I think that's a real problem with people using cutesy characterizations like, "I don't eat anything with eyes." At some point down the road, I'll have to sit through a conversation like, "Omigod, vegans can't eat potatoes!":eyes:

Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 10:35 AM by LeftyMom
Yeast is naturally occuring in the air. Real sourdough uses naturally occuring local yeast to rise, with no additional packaged yeast. It is a single-celled organism, one I could no more keep out of my diet than I can keep bacteria from colonizing my skin.

To be vegan is to work to eliminate as much of the suffering as possible from one's diet and lifestyle. Yeast are not animals, do not have the capacity to suffer and could not be entirely eliminated from one's diet in any case due to thier ubiquitousness in the air. There is no reason for vegans to avoid yeast.
