Informal opinion poll: High speed internet or cable? |
|
Just got an Apple IMAC; still using the crappy old 56k dial-up; it's like driving a Corvette on 4 flat tires...
I'm in the Boston area; Comcast offers cable access around 40-50 dollars a month; Verizon and others have high speed for half that...
Any opinions pro/con, on the merits of cable vs high speed?

5. Do you mean cable vs. DSL? |
|
I have cable at home; and DSL at work. I despise DSL. Despite their claims, service DOES get interrupted, if you live in a remote area.
I'm ready to call Charter and ask if they'd give the church a break on internet service. If you have a choice, go Cable.

It's okay. It's not always reliable, but then I've heard the same about DSL, too.
It is fast, which is nice. I can load the Lounge's big picture threads with no problems.

7. Both are 'high speed'. Go for DSL. Cable may be faster, but... |
|
DSL gives you a dedicated line (nobody else is on that segment because it's just you. Cable used a shared mechanism, while you get chared prices that ought to be for dedicated. All this meaning if your neighbors on your segment are surfing or playing Doom3 or whatever online, he's taking all the bandwidth and you might end up surfing at a crawl.
Of course, all this also means DSL is comparatively secure. Well, comparatively. No neighbor can snoop around others on the same segment with DSL. No segment. With cable, anyone can snoop around fairly easily. So you'll want a firewall, and ignore anyone who says Macs are invulnerable. NO platform is invulnerable to attacks. Period.
DSL may give you more speed for the price, but the other factors mean more to me.
