Everybody wish Quinn well
:(

The poor kitty had to be taken to the emergency vet last night (at midnight) for a urinary blockage. The poor guy was howling in the litter box, then hissing at me, the SO and poor Althea (who was being a VERY attentive and caring little sister).

He's at the vets catheterized, sedated and doing well at the moment (and I'm $1,100 0 $1,500 in the red).

The poor furry little bastard.

3. Thank you. They called me this AM and said he was doing well
But they're keeping him catheterized all day today, then keeping him under observation until tomorrow AM.

I can't tell whether Althea misses him or is enjoying some quiet time without sneak pounce attacks :).

2. Abbott & Evita send their love
Check the cat food you're feeding them. I've been using Royal Canin Indoor which is suppose to be helpful in preventing these things. Abbott has been lucky so far (urinary track issues are more common in males than females)

4. I might try some indoor food, they say he should get a more acidic diet
He's been getting Science Diet anti-furball dry food and Pet Guard canned (he loves the stuff, and it's very high quality).

Thanks

35. I can't say enough good things about Royal Canin
I get #27 which is for Indoor cats (#27) but I give them a bit of wet food each day because Evita won't touch dry unless I mix a bit of wet food in with it. Purina Pro-Plan has a wetfood for urinary tracts so I use that alot (They split a small can each day but the variety changes).

7. I've just been through this with Oreo...
but fortunately, she only needed an antibiotic. I noticed she kept going to the litterbox stopping, got out and "washed", then went back in again.

Quinn, get better soon! Your daddy needs you!!:loveya:

Oreo and Binky send their best wishes for a speedy recovery.

(and yeah to the vet - my last 2 paychecks have literally gone directly to the Green Bay Cat Clinic.)

But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here,

Nothing to do with Quinn the Eskimo, it's a Robert Townsend film from Jamaica. Denzel Washington in an early role. Completely irrelevant to the conversation.

22. He should make it through that. How is the water where you live?
I had a cat who kept getting these blockages despite the best prescription food the doctors could give us. It finally occured to me that the mineral content of our water was very high, so I started giving him Brita filtered water, and he never had the problem again. Can't swear there was a connection, but I'll pass it along in case.

Oh yeah, and don't give cats bottled water from spring or mineral water. Same problem. Filtered or distilled. Tap if the mineral content is low enough.

Good luck, Quinn! You're now a Golden Kitty (a term my neighbor uses for a cat that's had over a thousand dollars of medical treatment)!

28. Poor Guy!
That's got to be one of the scariest things in the world - a tomcat with a blockage. Thomas (who's as cute as Quinn but is a grey and white Maine Coon) has had them due to hemorrhagic cystitis (few things worse than coming home to find your kitty covered on blood). When I took him to the emergency very, he was in acute kidney failure and they thought he would die. They cleared the blood clot that was blocking him, and within hours (and a thousand dollars) his kidney function was normal and his bloodwork was, too. He's still prone to bladder infections, but at the first sight of straining, he gets stuffed full of antibiotics and prednisolone and is doing just great.

I hope Quinn's story is similar, with fewer bladder infections! Don't forget to give him distilled water - no matter what is causing his problems, it will help and it can't hurt. You and Quinn have my best wishes; it's terribly worrying to have a sick kitty, and it's no fun for the cat, either.

29. Oh, poor baby Quinn. There is a special food you can buy...
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 10:56 AM by Flaxbee
This isn't unusual in male cats. My sister's cat had this condition onset at an early age, and very severely. Poor guy was in pain all the freaking time, yowling every time he peed, he was having to be catheterized frequently until she switched vets and the dr. had her put the boykitty on a special diet -- the ONLY thing he can eat is this specially formulated, purchase-at-vet's-only, kibble. Otherwise he's back to a blockage immediately (so it seems). Problem is, the other cat eats it and has gotten rather -- ahem -- pudgy (nothing wrong with other cats eating it, though, even if they don't have problems).

SO - ask your vet about a special diet. I don't recall the name of the food my sister uses (and it really has worked miracles) but if you'd like me to find out the name of it, I'll ask her and get you the info. Also, I don't believe this food it too expensive - my sister is on a tight budget and I know she'd have said something if the food was costly.

I hope Quinn feels better soon!

This guy, Charles,

had a nasty bout of urinary blockage when he was about 5. Got him to the vet; they fixed him up -- and he lived to be 21. With all the improvements in veterinary medicine since then, I'm sure Quinn will recover even more quickly and live happily ever after.
