McDonald's Honors Egg McMuffin Inventor
i gotta admit i LOVE those damned things

<snip>

Herb Peterson, a Rogers Park native, created the McMuffin breakfast sandwich out of frustration 35 years ago.

He was hungry for breakfast, but McDonald's restaurants didn't open until 11 a.m.

Last night, Peterson was honored for the frustration that led to the Egg McMuffin as McDonald's Corp. presented him with its highest marketing award, the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Peterson is an idea man who, at 87, still makes impromptu phone calls from his California home to McDonald's headquarters to suggest new products. As a newly minted McDonald's restaurant operator in 1971, Peterson believed he wasn't the only McDonald's fan who was hungry before 11 a.m.

21. extra fatty greaseburger?
I'm assuming there are still only 3 meals per day.

The Egg McMuffin has 300 calories (15% based on a 2,000 calorie diet) of which 110 are calories from fat. Total Fat is 12 grams (18%), 4.5 grams saturated fat (22%). I'll grant you it is high in cholesterol at 230 mg (77%) but that is largely because of the eggs on it and the egg debate is still ongoing.

The fact of the matter is, that among all of the breakfast items offered at most fast food joints, the Egg McMuffin is one of the most sensible choices out there from a caloric and fat standpoint.

In fact, even if an order of hash browns were added, it would raise the calories to 440, the total fat to 20 grams and the cholesterol remains the same. If the choice of beverage were water, orange juice, 2% milk, or even a diet soda, this is not an unusually unhealthy breakfast. Granted, it's not ideal, but compared to what a lot of folks eat for breakfast, this would be freaking peachy.

5. Great Idea - Horrific Implementation
I've made egg "mcmuffins" at home that are great. English Muffins, a couple of fried eggs, cheese....sometimes if my wife isn't around I'll sneak on some bacon. I might get "saucy" and put on hot sauce or bbq sauce...They're awesome for breakfast.

Yet the ones at mcdonalds....the mcmuffins are blech....the eggs, well are they eggs? Yuck...the cheese is processed low grade prison cheese...Yuck.

Great idea. Horrific Implementation.

6. They are the only thing I ever go to McDonald's for
And only if I'm traveling. I remember when they first came out-they were bigger then.

I also love those McD hashbrowns.

He should have monuments erected in his honor
His likeness should be on US currency
We should all get a day off for his birthday

8. Herb deserves some recognition
for starting the whole Mconalds breakfast thing, but the true visionary is the guy who created the bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. Nothing fortifies the inner man like a pair of bacon, egg and cheese biscuits. They also provide a great morning stabilizer after an evening of over-indulgence.

12. "All GOOD things in moderation"
otherwise one is advocating meth in moderation, cancer in moderation, torture in moderation, arsenic in moderation, etc.

19. Invention ?!
They have been putting fried eggs in between bread for centuries. As long is putting "Mc" in front of an existing food entity is good enough for Mickey D, here are some more inventions for them:

McPeanut Butter and Jelly sandwich
McHot Dog
McKentucky Fried Chicken
McSlice of Pizza
McGrilled Cheese Sandwich
McPhilly Cheese steak
McReuben
McPastrami on Rye

So take that Herb Paterson! I just invented 8 items in 60 seconds! You had 87 years and only came up with one?! You slacker you!

;-)
