Daniel radcliffe (Harry Potter) Nude stage debut
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 12:24 PM by romantico
As long as this isn't in a sexual manner, I have no problem with this. I really admire him for being so brave. Keep in mind, this story comes from the New York Post. Facts aren't exactly their specialty, so take this with a grain of salt!

34. I went to a college where half the students were equine majors and...
everyone in the honors program was required to take the same art appreciation class. I was a theatre/English major and it was taught by the head of the theatre dept, who definitely qualifies as a deeply evil man. Most of the people in the class were equine majors. One day he went on and on about how wonderful "Equus" was and how it should be required viewing for all equine majors. Meanwhile, I'm just laughing my ass off. Finally, he says, "Yes, it's a wonderful play about a boy who goes mad and blinds a bunch of horses." They freaked out sooo bad, it was great.

37. Even if it involved horses, they wouldn't have gone to see it.
Just because you're in an honors program, for getting As in riding ponies, doesn't mean you have an oz of culture. Most of them actually listed Thomas Kinkade as their favorite artist and had never seen a play before.

2. They talked about it on Regis and Kelly this morning.
Yes, full nudity.

And what do you mean by "isn't in a sexual nature"?

But I see in the article that Radcliffe is only 17, which makes me think that he won't be appearing in the nude - I'm not sure what the laws are, but I don't think a minor can appear in the nude. But then, I have no idea and so could be speaking out of my ass.

5. Minors have appeared nude in movies, so it's probably legal onstage.
I don't have my copy of the Actors' Equity rulebook around, but I think it's allowed.

7. Really? Wow. I just assumed it would be automatic child porn.
It's good to know that in the US, every now and again, something good happens (in this case, a mature outlook on nudity) without people getting all bent out of shape over it.

15. Brooke Shields was only 15 when she made "Blue Lagoon"
It would have to be highly regulated of course. Hell, if you have an underage actor in a stage show, then you must also have a "child wrangler" to keep the kid out of trouble, occupied, and not bothering the adult actors.

30. Equus requires full nudity...
In fact, during one long, intense monologue, his character has an onstage orgasm while describing to his shrink a sexually packed ride he took on horse.

Harry Potter in "Equus" -- now that will be fascinating!

31. If I remember the movie correctly,
wouldn't he have to be naked, wearing a bridle, and whipping his ass with a crop at some point? I'm not kidding, I think this was an actual scene in the movie.

41. Child nudity is NOT illegal in the US.
Yes, every now and then you get an overzealous prosecutor who tries to throw some parent in the can over a bathtub photo, but those cases ALWAYS get tossed.

Federal law describes child pornography as the posing of a child in a sexual or lascivious manner. It doesn't even require that they be nude, people have been sent to prison for child pornography when the victim in the photos was still in underwear or a swimsuit. The requirement is that it has to be deliberately erotic.

Having children nude isn't illegal. Using children in a sexual manner is. Having a 17 year old strip for a play is entirely legal, as long as the play isn't intended to sexually excite the audience or turn the actor into an object of sexual desire.

BTW, I'm not a pervert. I got into an argument with my photo processor once after they had developed some vacation photos. I was taking pictures on the beach, and shot a photo of my 10 year old daughter sunning in her swimsuit. The processor warned me that the photo was potentially illegal because her legs were slightly ajar and a pervert might have found it to be voyeuristic child porn. I thought he was an idiot, looked up the law, and found out he was right. I've never had a print made of the photo just to be safe (it doesn't show anything, it was just an unfortunate angle).

42. I really doubt that.
I haven't heard of anyone protesting "Equus" over the horse blinding and between being involved with animal rights and working in theatre, I'd probably have heard about it somewhere.

Feel free to prove me wrong.

46. I'm sure they won't
but you get some real whack jobs when it comes to even the IDEA of some things. Never underestimate the fundamentalist idiots, no matter what their persuasion.

I was reminded of this last weekend when BBCAm was showing an Avengers marathon and they showed the episode "The See-Through Man". This caused a big stir here when it was first shown (many many years ago, of course) because for a man to be 'see-through' he had to be naked and you couldn't have naked people on tv...even if you couldn't see them.
