vocalist. Her early life is very sketchy. Rumor has it that she escaped a bad home environment with her step-dad after her mom died, and entered a contest at the Apollo (famous jazz place in the '30's) and the rest is history. No one has been able to document that, but it's a nice story. Anyway, she does have a great voice, and I feel one can not be judgmental about content/context of her songs. It's just the time . . . just the era.

Interesting story. I was there over New Years Eve. It was cold. I am wearing a hat with to really sharp hair needles sticking in my hat. When I flew out of Newark of course to go through security. I was wearing the hat. I had a bottle of water in my hand. I had to drink from the water. They didn't notice the needles. They are as said very sharp and if I wanted I could hurt someone with them. I came to the plane with no one saying anything about it. When that happened? December 2001.
