My loathing of that thread was the fact that I was hobbled with a dial-up modem and I lost track of the whole story after fifty posts, or so.

15. Kudzu is a type of invasive vine that spreads extremely quickly.

I believe it originates in Japan, or some other Asian country. It has become a serious problem in the southern US, as it is difficult to remove.

ANYHOW, that swag upthread started a thread on Decmber 19th, 2005 entitled "I'm bullish on kudzu. It's going places!" The only thing posted in the original message was a map of the growth of kudzu.

The thread grew to be 1,261 posts long, and quickly became forever imbedded in Lounge memory as one of the longest-running, and certainly the most random, threads ever. While early replies directly referenced kudzu, by the time the thread was finally locking by DU moderator Call Me Wesley on May 31st, 2006, it had, like it's real-life original subject matter, spread off in a thousand directions and resisted many previous attempts to "be killed." Many DUers got thoroughly annoyed of the whole thing, and upon his locking it, Call Me Wesley was both praised and villified. There have been a few attempts to "revive" the thread, but whether they will succeed or not will take many months of waiting.

Basically, it's a Lounge-thing: an inside joke. ;)

... of encouraging southerners to plant the non-native kudzu vine all over the south. it was easy to grow and people thought it was pretty, so it caught on. kudzu clubs formed, and enthusiasts planted the stuff all over the place. eventually the fad wore off. the kudzu, however, did not vanish with the kudzu fad. in fact, not only is kudzu easy to grow, it also is damn near impossible to eradicate. thus, along the highways and byways of the south, you will find acres smothered in glorious kudzu to the exclusion of everything else. it's just another one of those things that, like playing russian roulette or mainlining smack, may have once seemed like a good idea but somehow has since lost its lustre ...
