The War of the Roses, Stars and Stripes

....................

I’m afraid we like hating too much. It’s just so much easier. The American political landscape is in the throes of a messy, scandalous divorce. We’re infamous. We love hating each other. We love hating the world. We are tabloid fodder for a global audience. Our democracy is a marriage, and we’re treating it like a one-night stand. Marriages aren’t about flashy fights, they are about commitment, compromise, and caring so much that there are lines that won’t be crossed. The marriage is a creation that makes the people in it better than they are alone.

......................

We are knee-jerking ourselves into World War III. And contrary to the well-played scenarios running through a mind near you, there are no guarantees in war. We may not do well in this, with our flat-lining economy, monstrous debt and our oil backed currency.

Internally, is America destined to flame out in messy war of the roses, or are we going to take the more difficult path to talk across the red-blue divide, work compromises and forge a marriage of democracy destined to last another 200 years? Are we ready for the hard stuff?

The real work happens after we say, “I do."

1. From Jon Stewart:
"America long ago lost her innocence, and now she's standing on a street corner, blowing dogs for crack money."
