LONDON (AP) - Paul McCartney has filed for divorce from Heather Mills McCartney, formally beginning proceedings in what could be one of Britain's most expensive breakups, newspapers reported Saturday.

The 64-year-old former Beatle blamed his estranged wife for the split, saying her behavior was unreasonable and argumentative, The Sun and The Daily Mirror reported. Her spokesman, Phil Hall, said she was unhappy about the reports.

"Heather's going to be filing her own counterclaims about matters both in this country and America," Hall said in a statement.

"She does not feel the need to repudiate claims that she may be headstrong or feisty. She is hugely disappointed that matters of such a confidential nature should be aired in public and feels it is inappropriate to speak about such delicate matters when a child is involved."

The couple have a 2-year-old daughter, Beatrice.

McCartney, who does not have a prenuptial agreement to protect his estimated $1.5 billion fortune, has hired lawyer Fiona Shackleton, who represented Prince Charles in his divorce from Princess Diana.

McCartney was photographed Friday without his wedding ring during a visit to his performing arts school in Liverpool on England's northwest coast.

7. I am just going to sit here and watch the sexist comments start
the "golddigger" accusations, the accusations that poor Paul has just been duped....yadda yadda yadda...

and you know what....

if he was smart enough to amass a fortune...then you would think he would be smart enough to protect it or have someone on his staff to help him....

so...perhaps...he married her for love and it just didn't work...just like a lot of other folks.

But he and his wife have a child....and they have to work this out like adults...hopefully they will...

15. Heather Mills rocks.
Who the hell else could get Paris Hilton to decry wearing fur. And she tried to use her title to get that uncaring bloody bitch Jennifer Lopez to see what kind of cruelty she is endorsing and supporting as well. Who else on God's green earth would marry a billionaire and try to use his title and access to try to bring an end to the suffering of the most vulnerable on this planet. Who, I ask the naysayers, who?

19. England judges don't have to honor pre-nups...
So most people don't get them. She'll only be entitled to like a 1/3 of his fortune, I believe.

8. I don't know the divorce laws of Great Britain, but considering the
short duration of their marriage (less than five years, I believe) and the fact that Paul McCartney acquired the large majority of his wealth LONG before he married Heather Mills, (plenty of that even before she was born), then her best claim to a large chunk of Paul's fortune would be through getting sole custody of the child with a very large child support allotment. McCartney, if he wants it, most likely could get custody of their daughter. After all, he has a proven record as a good and very involved parent of his children with Linda and her child from a previous relationship.

Mills settlement otherwise would be very generous compared to what most divorced women receive, but not enough to make a huge hole in the McCartney holdings. Perhaps one half of the income for the period they were married. Any claim, for example, of the ranch in Arizona that McCartney owned with his late wife Linda, would probably not fly unless he was misguided enough to put her name on the deeds when they married.

10. Poor old chap, he missed his Linda
No Crip jokes here.

Paul did make some pop crap but he and his friends also made
some music that will always make my heart glad or make me think.

I hope he finds his bliss. We will never see the likes of the Beatles again.

13. Divorce is painful enough, can't imagine how much it sucks
when you've been a good guy like Paul all your life. You make a bad decision, some mistakes of your own in the relationship and now its all so very public. Wish they could find a way to finish it quickly - these high profile and superfluous media distractions are so tiresome.

14. She looks angry, he looks depressed.
When someone has an unbelievably good marriage for so long, as Paul did with Linda, it is only human to think that future relationships can be like that. But just as each child born to a family is unique, each relationship is unique - and that can be a startling revelation, simple as the logic is.

Yes, he was a very lonely man, and he is a very good man.

God bless them both, and I hope that the future will hold happier times for them.
