Tell us about a war zone you've visited that was beautiful.
I've heard friends describe such things, and something attracts me about the juxtaposition of war in a beautiful place.

4. Where in Belize?
I spent a summer working an archaeological project there in San Estefan, near Orange Walk. Site was on an island in a lagoon...talk about beauty!

3. Does Gettysburg, PA count?
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 08:58 PM by njdemocrat106
It's a very peaceful and bucolic little town; hard to believe one of the major battles of the Civil War was fought there.

6. I have two...
Gettysburg and Little Big Horn.

Gettysburg is so peaceful today that it's hard
to inagine the carnage that took place there. Until
9/11, the second day of the battle was the bloodiest
day in US history. It's now the second bloodiest:cry:

Little Big Horn is also peaceful and beautiful. On a
hill overlooking the river and peaceful meadows. It's
within the Crow Reservation today. I'm by no means a
military expert, but just seeing where the soldiers,
including Custer, fell is a testament to Custer's
incompetence and Sitting Bull's leadership. They never
had a chance.

8. Nha Trang, (South) Vietnam
It's truly a tropical paradise. I spent a year there during the war, and I'd love to visit it again someday. http://www.vietscape.com/travel/nhatrang/index.html

Also, Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Chickamauga, Georgia...beautiful places!

12. The full moon over the Saudi desert is in my top five "Most Beautiful
Things I Have Ever Seen" list.

The moon and stars were bright enough to cast sharp shadows of us and our tanks in our circle-camp at night. I wish I had had the equipment to take a good long-exposure photo of the landscape.
