Lounge men: Are you a manly man? |
|
I can be. But I'm not self-conscious about it...I'm who I am, and I'm more sensitive, thoughtful, and self-aware than might be the typical manly hallmark. But most of the activities I enjoy and my career (my primary one, that I'm on hiatus from, and to a great extent what I do now) are decidedly macho, at least outwardly.
But I sure smell a tad manly now...riding around in black leather in the desert will do that to you. :D

1. I'm actually struggling to answer this question. |
|
I suppose it all goes back to your definition of 'manly', doesn't it? That's actually harder to define than you might think, if you take it seriously.

I chose to see it as your typical Macho Macho Man kind of thing, the ideal promulgated in so many movies and TV shows of yore...like a John Wayne character, but maybe less introspective.
In my case, I found that my activities (career and recreational) placed me squarely in the macho camp but my character in many ways has a lot more in common with (simarly broadly-painted) traditional notions of femininity. Some people looking at the facts of my life and at what I do have before seen me as a prototypical macho-man (I've been told as much) but people who know me wouldn't characterize me that way. To me, the real definition of a person isn't often found in what they do...not entirely, anyway.
I'm a rugged girlyman. :D

Seriously, I do "manly" things like work on cars (I love motorcycles :D) and outdoorsy-type things/working out, and more intellectual, typically male-dominated pursuits like computer science (game developer by profession...hopefully).
I love music, yet some of the stuff I listen to will dissolve your soul after prolonged exposure, love to write, etc...
Who knows?

but probably only because I'll make my own definition. :)
I take my responsibilities seriously, independent minded, like to be active and try and keep in shape.
But I also consider it manly to be aware of the needs of others, be supportive and compassionate and know when a child or a woman needs me to just shut up and listen and not ridicule other men that might not be as "manly" as me and maybe listen to them for tips on somethings I may not be good at. :)
I do recognize that I may not be fully "manly" because I'm also not very competitive - I can be at times but usually I compete against my own goals not others. I'm not much for team sports my 'manly' actives are thinks like hiking, climbing, skiing, individual challenges like that.
And I'm not very good with cars - that's probably my biggest "manly" failing. :)

45. My father's really mechanically-inclined, too |
|
Though, oddly, he has at least mild trouble with electronic devices like VCRs and is terrified of computers. He's a brilliant handyman, too, in general, and has done everything from rebuilding boats to singlehandedly renovating and reconfiguring our homes. Messed his back up when he was younger, when he and his cousin would pull out engines from '40s-era Chevys and the like by wrapping a chain around their shoulders and just lifting...
I didn't get much of that mechanical/handyman ability. :D
On the other hand, with all the black boxes and sealed modular (expensive!) components in today's cars, he's not quite as far ahead of me in this respect as once was the case.

39. Women think I am, men do not. |
|
To women, I'm a gentle, kind, sensitive, caring, evolved man full of compassion and good humor. From what I hear from them, that's how a man should be. I can also move really heavy shit all by myself. An added bonus.
To men, I'm a tofu munching sprout hound who detests watching sports and spends his time caring for formerly abused pets, and working towards the rights of women, children, gays, the elderly and animals. Not too manly.
I guess to some, I am. To some, I'm not. I'm definitely not macho.

On the yes side:
Into cars, especially if they're fast. Combined top speed of the two I own is over 300 mph.
Enjoy working on the cars, when I can make the time. Put headers on the '96 Camaro Z28. Step 1, remove alternator. Step 2, ......., Step 300, re-install alternator. A bitch of a project.
I take my career and responsibilities seriously.
Don't mind watching a football game on occasion. Can burp and fart with the best of them.
My yearly vacation is a one week fishing trip to Canada with my dad. Coming up in 5 weeks!
On the no side:
I live with my boyfriend of ten years.
I like to cook.
I've seen every episode of Sponge Bob, most several times.
You decide.
