This is my friend Art's motorcycle, he had it displayed at the
Blessing of the Cars today. So I brought along my
Camera Lucida for the heck of it to draw cars because cars are hard to draw and I'm not a car bluff, so I figured this would be a fun way to spend the day. Depending on the light, it's easier to see the reflection on black paper. Earlier I bought some scratchboard and decided to give it a try... hey, why not? And why not try my first ever attempt at scratchboard on an even harder object to draw but a motorcycle!
While I was scratching people would stop over and watch, I'd let them look through the camera lucida to show them what I was doing. One gentleman told me he hadn't seen one in years and he himself used them on occasion - he's since switched to an opaque projector - he's a painter. We chatted for a bit and he went on his way. Afterward a few friends rushed up to me asking what we talked about because this guy was a real famous hot-rod artist. He was none other than
Robert Williams founder of
Juxtapoz Magazine and coiner of the phrase "low brow art". I had a brush with greatness and didn't even know it.
Oh well, I think it works for a first time (sorry for the blurry photo), I very much enjoyed working with the medium and I look forward to trying more scratchboard drawings.
