Shoot, I consider it a massive hardship to sit in a middle seat for a cross country flight. Cushioned seat, someone bringing me drinks and snacks, air conditioning, and it takes 4-5 hours.
Back then they walked/rode and it took 6 months of unbelievable hardships.
We have less problems because we are WIMPS.
