Name an album that should be in every collection.
The title speaks for itself. I'm looking for a list of albums that EVERYONE should have in their music libraries. Albums that changed the world, albums that changed people, albums that just flat out ROCK. If you had unlimited funds and could put together your dream collection, what would be in it?

It's time to update the iPod...I'm looking for suggestions :)

8. the dB's first two albums
Many critics and myself think they should be in everyone's collection. Alas that sentiment isn't shared by the masses based on sales figures. Of course the roar of the masses could be farts, at least according to another essential album: the Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime.

Ella Fitzgerald, The Best of the Songbooks (It has "Miss Otis Regrets)

Brubeck's, Take Five

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Birth of the Cool, Sketches of Spain

Benny Goodman, 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert and The Very Best of Benny Goodman (It has Moonglow with Hampton on vibes)

Louie Armstrong, 25 Greatest Hot Five and Sevens

Stones, Forty Licks (remaster of their greatests)

And for something classical, Bruno Walter and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven's 6th Symphony (the best interpretation, IMO)

91. I would go with anything Joni did, but I have reasons for Hejira.
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 01:32 PM by Joe Fields
The first time I heard it was in a car, on my way to Yellowstone for a three week camping vacation. My brother had just bought the tape in Grand Junction, Colorado the day before we left. We listened to it all the way to Yellowstone.

To me, Court and Spark is a great collection of songs, but they are a little commercial, some songs getting radio play. Hejira, collectively is an album that evokes an overall mood.

Nobody has a way with words like Joni. She uses them like a Dutch master used paint and brush to canvas.

96. I Must Agree
Hejira is my hands down favorite to this day. I bought it when I was fifteen years old and didn't think much of it at the time, but after having played it a few times while at university, the poetry of her writing and the oblique jazz riffs really grew on me.

Think I'll go and put it on now!

88. IMO the greatest RocknRoll band of all time is the New York
Dolls. Their eponymous debut album was probably their best.

The Dolls (whose orig lineup lasted from apx 1972-1975) took all that was great about 60's RnR, amped it up and spit out a genius RnR sound that has never been duplicated IMO. Think of the Shangri la's fronting the Rolling Stones doing 'Rip this Joint.'

The Dolls were like Goldilox to me. The Beatles/Stones/Who weren't quite heavy, loud and fast enough for me. Punk and metal bands got that part right, but dropped completely the ROLL part of rock-n-roll. The Dolls had it all- the fury and anarchy of punk rock (which they predated) combined with the fun and soul of the 60's.

I would recommend their first 2 studio albums: 'New York Dolls' and 'Too Much Too Soon' for starters. Then if you dig it, my favorite Dolls record is actually their demo. It goes by several different names: '7 Day Weekend' 'Endless Party' or probably the most comprehensive of those sessions is called 'A Hard Night's Day.'
