8. The plant that ate the South

I think it was Auburn University researchers ("Roll Tide!", or whatever the f*** battle cry is theirs) that unleashed it as a bit of a booboo -- at least, that's what I heard at a rival university, so maybe that explains the location of the blame -- and it quickly spread throughout a big chunk of the South, the soil and climate making it grow way better than in its native Japan. A very familiar story in many parts of the world. This particular invasive species covers large areas of ground -- it's a creeping vine -- and it grows very quickly. Its roots can actually be used for...um..something...local health food stores below the Manson-Nixon Line often carry site-ground kudzu flour, anyway. It also, of course, stabilizes dicey ground, so it's actually not entirely evil in parts of the South where poor land management practices have resulted in denuded land and significant erosional degradation and loss of topsoil. And it looks kind of cool, too.

I haven't looked at the thread because the first time I noted its presence it had a good chunk of a Brazillion responses and, though my connection's fast enough, its very bulk frightened me. :scared:
