I didn't follow popular music at all, and had no real idea who he was. I remember it being very sad for some reason I couldn't put my finger on. His death still resonates with me that way.
I did learn more about him years later. I can't say I'm a huge Beatles fan or a fan of his music, but he certainly stood up for his beliefs.
