2. SWEET
With Gagne out for good with his injury... this is what they needed.

4. This is about Tomko, not Gagne
They've put Tomko in the bullpen since he came off the DL, and Hendrickson and the kid Billingsley haven't shown much. (Okay, Billingsley did in one game a week ago.) They needed another solid starter if they're gonna make a serious push, and with O. Perez gone, Tomko will be a good fit as a reliever/spot starter. I think they'll send Billingsley to the pen and have Lowe, Penny, Sele, Hendrickson and Maddux in the rotation.

They also got Julio Lugo from Tampa for two minor leaguers, so with Betemit (who had two doubles and a single in his debut yesterday), that fills the holes left by Izturis and Aybar.

Seems like a pretty good series of deals.

5. I know
I wasn't talking about a one-for-one exchange in terms of what type of pitcher, just in terms of net pitching worth. What we lack in closing power we have made up a bit in the starting rotation. The fewer runs allowed by the starters (with our offense doing what is expected), the less severe the need for a solid pen. Or so my theory goes. :-)

I saw Betemit's debut, and hope this is a sign of a great August. July is history, thank Jackie Robinson's ghost!

6. Ah, gotcha
Yeah, it sorta works out the same as if they'd dealt for a closer. I think (hope) it strengthens the late relief, too.

You go to the game yesterday? I hope Betemit didn't get too discouraged as one of four guys left on base after a leadoff double. :eyes:

7. Just part of it on TV
I only go to night games this time of year... per the heat. Make sure I sit on the left field side, too.

Benefit of being in the West division. It won't take much to close in on SD and the rest.

Lose eight straight and 12 of 13 and you're still only five back.

9. Doesn't matter the Yanks had the best deadline
of any team. They fill their needs and get Abreu, Lidle and Wilson for 4 crappy minor leaguers and the horrible Shawn Chacon.

10. And the Padres beef up with Todd Walker??!!
Kevin Towers is the worst GM in MLB. His team is fighting for a division title and he trades for a utility guy?
Oh my!!

12. Don't underestimate Walker...
He can hit. And his defense has gotten MUCH better than it was when he was with Boston.

11. *sigh*
I know. Sad...

Now we're left with Zambrano...and that's pretty much it.

Wood's out for the season, most likely.

Prior hasn't got a win yet and a 6.60 ERA.

We've got rookies...Carlos 'the mammal' Marmol (he's got potential). We've got Sean Marshall (but he seems to be MIA lately). Someone else.

We've got Rich 'curve-ball-that-everyone-in-the-league-can-hit' Hill.

Hill starts tomorrow. He's 0-4 with an ERA of....

are you sitting down???

9.03.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuck.

I'm gonna go crawl in a hole and cry my end-of-season tears now.

I'm gonna miss the hell outta Maddux. Besides needing him in the rotation...I just loved to watch him, win or lose. And a more self-effacing, nicer guy you'll never run across.

Beautiful...absolutely beautiful.

*sigh*

He WILL be missed.
