Your favorite local independent diner? |
|
My vote goes to Jack's in Wilmington, CA. Nini introduced me to this place over a year ago, and that is our "go-to" place for breakfast or lunch - their hours are from 5AM to 3PM, so that is their menu. They are near L.A. Harbor, so they have a lot of hungry longshoremen who eat there, and of course, L.A. firefighters too. It's affordable and tasty, and the staff is friendly and hardworking.
My recommendation: Their omelettes or waffles. :9 They have good sandwiches and burgers too!
What is your favorite local non-chain diner? (Or as I like to call them, "greasy spoon").

though the food is hit/miss depending on who is working. It's the only 24/7 diner in NH.

4. Alex Borgman. He's the most indpendent diner in town. |
|
He goes where HE wants to go, and he'll order from the menu - but he'll order what he wants, and only what he wants!
Totally independent. A total inspiration to the rest of us diners, who strive, but forever fail, to show that kind of independent restaurant consumerism.

5. Believe it or not, we don't have any greasy spoons near me. |
|
All the chains have moved in, along with some wonderful independent restaurants.
Our new favorite is Soya's grill and bar. Best sushi and teriyaki salmon I ever tasted.

33. I miss the NY style, Greek diners the most. |
|
They had the best burgers and the absolutely most delicious cole slaw.
I went to a restaurant down here when we first moved here thinking it was a typical NE Greek diner. It was horrid. Not even close. :puke:

24 hour joint but it's nice to go to after you go out to the bar and such--it's out of town a bit so there's never a huge crowd and the food and service is excellent.

14. There's this new Mercedes ad on TV |
|
You may have seen it, it runs nationwide... it features a local diner called 'Ricky & Ronnie's', which is a 50's themed place... It's our favorite local diner for dinner... and just around the corner! We tripped when we saw the ad, because we had no idea they filmed one. Lots of local antique car clubs have gatherings there. They have the BEST DESSERTS in the region. :9

best hand made french fries I have ever eaten. Good dawgs, byurgers - usual diner fare with lots of interest, especially this time of the year.
Breakfast regulars - you have to be careful not to sit in a regular's seat!

Had to get the muffler on my car replaced while heading across the country from Virginia Beach to Everett, WA. I was only near there because I stayed at a friend's in Blacksburg. :-)
Flew into the airport once too... the runway was almost wider than it was long, lol.

I'm long overdue for a Roanoke trip...

Three of them are in and around my little town. Used to be four but the Hackettstown diner was burned down for the insurance money. It didn't work. They're all pretty lousy, but the one I spend the most time at is the Budd Lake Diner.

30. Kerbey Lane Cafe (south) or Star Seeds |
|
Kerbey Lane has 3 locations (I think) in Austin, but I only frequent the South Lamar location. Great CA food, pancakes, best queso in town. Star Seeds (a bit on the seedy side) has the excellent breakfast tacos, a must after a night of drinking. And both are open 24hours!

The servers are annoyed, the food is cheap, the locals are rough, and the tourists are annoying. Add to that, the building is slanted so far to the side you wonder if it'll stand long enough for you to finish your meal. My kinda place. ;)
(and yes, I'm serious; it's the perfect hang-out for a college town).
There's also a new local ice cream shop that's pretty cool. And the Dutch Maid Bakery is a classic.
