Foxfire! The glowing forest!
I saw the strangest phenomenom in the forest last evening. I was taking my dog through a walk on a dirt road winding through the forest in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep when I noticed a patch of tree stumps brightly glowing. At first I thought it was simply the mean but then I realized the moon was blocked out by clouds so I went to inspect. These tree stumps and clumps of wood around them were glowing brightly! not just minimally showing feint signs of emitting light but brightly casting down an eery bright green glow. When I put my hand near the stump it lit it up perfectly! nearly as light as day. I took a chunk home with me, when I got back out on the paved road I met a fellow insomniac wandering the suburban streets and he had never seen anything like it himself. a brightly glowing chunk of wood! we joked for a while that maybe I was walking around with a piece of plutonium and my hands were going to melt off in the morning. After doing a bit of googling I found out it's called fox-fire. I found out Foxfire is a natural phenomenon sometimes visible at night in forests. It's caused by bioluminescent fungi in special conditions—usually on rotting bark. If I could I would cultivate this stuff and make an entire acre of forest glow at night, how crazy would that be?

5. Look for tree stumps after a couple humid days
that apparently is the optimum time.

3. Have you ever seen Dismalites?
The "glowworm" that lives in North Alabama. http://www.dismalscanyon.com/

I grew up in the country seeing foxfires. I always loved spending time in the woods at night.

4. We used to put it in jars on camping trips when we were kids
lots of light...and it lasts longer than fireflies...
