In-N-Out makes the BEST fast food burgers ANYWHERE. And it's technically not a chain, since they are all owned by her family, and not franchised. The employees are paid VERY well, with full benefits including medical and retirement.

The burgers are 100% beef, never frozen, with the buns made fresh from dough and oven-baked, and the fries are freshly cut, and fried in 100% cholesterol-free oil. The menu is simple and cheap - no frills or gimmicks. In southern CA, it doesn't make sense to eat at the megacorporate fast food franchises with their mystery meats and deep-fried whatsits, at nearly twice the cost, with the employees paid half as much.

Her late husband, co-founder Harry Snyder, is generally credited with inventing the drive-through window, or at least popularizing it.

Here's to Esther - make mine 'animal-style'! :toast:

Esther Snyder, matriarch of In-N-Out Burger, dies
By Christina L. Esparza Staff Writer

BALDWIN PARK - Esther Snyder, matriarch of the In-N-Out Burger chain and Baldwin Park community philanthropist, died Friday, family members said. She was 86.

Born Esther Lavelle Johnson in 1920, Snyder's husband, Harry, founded In-N-Out Burger in Baldwin Park in 1948. In-N-Out was the first hamburger stand in California to utilize the drive-through window.

"She was so supportive of her husband when he opened In-N-Out," said Bob Benbow, president of the Baldwin Park Historical Society and a friend of Snyder's. "Baldwin Park was blessed in having her and In-N-Out as part of the community."

Snyder, raised in Illinois, was one of eight children and served as a Woman Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service as a surgical nurse from 1942 to 1945.

She met Harry Snyder, who was in the catering` business, in Seattle while she was attending Seattle Pacific University majoring in zoology.

The pair married in 1948 and moved to Baldwin Park to open In-N-Out that same year.
