Is there a way to tell the 18yo guest of my daughter's who has been living
here for 5 months that all the pink stuff she bought for her dorm room is going to make her roommates absolutely friggin' despise her, or should I just bite my tongue?

Mind you. She took over my daughter's room. AND, now she has all her new stuff laid out in Mr. Midlo's office.

I fear this isn't going to be pretty.

1. "Hey asshole, that shit makes me want to vomit?"
No, I guess that might not be the most tactful method...

4. You wouldn't believe it. Her roommates, she has two, are going to
hate her.

She even has a pink car. You can't make this shit up.

She must have spent $1000 at Target on dorm room stuff, pillows and blankets and lamps and mirrors and wastebaskets.

When I went to college, I had a suitcase and my trunk filled with pillows, etc.

8. $1,000
If she had that much cash, why on earth would she be living with you for 5 months, she can get a residence hotel.:sarcasm:

Anyhow, yes, you are probably right, the roommates are going to hate her. I had one like that...she arrived with 23 pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage. But after I made her give it up, she ended up being pretty cool.

Peace

9. She has worked just about every day since she turned 15 and has
absolutely nothing to show for it. WHen she quit her job at Friendly's I had to make her car payment for her.

She owes me close to $1000. It is the weirdest thing I have ever seen. She probably has over 100 pairs of shoes.

13. Wow - you are a much kinder person than I think I would
be....

Maybe you can take all the stuff that she laid out everywhere and return it at Target for a store credit...then you get your $1000 back, and you can do some holiday shopping.

14. I think I got snookered, actually, along with my daughter.
My daughter came home with this huge tale of woe about her friend whose mom was bipolar, dad was abusive, brother in a gang always stealing her stuff, you get the drift.

We were under the impression that she was working to put food on the table for her mom and brother, so of course we offered to let her live here, thinking that she could save a little money for school or spend some on herself for a change. When she moved in, we were truly horrified at the amount of clothes she had.

And shoes. Imelda Marcos has nothing on this kid.

Major snookering.

17. Could be you did.
Wow, what a sob story.

Now, people say that I got shoes, but my kid never wants for anything, the mortgage is paid, you know the drill.

That just plain bites.

11. Style aside. It is the sheer volume of stuff that she has purchased.
It is mind boggling. My daugher's closet, which has a California closet type configuration is completely full of HER clothes. In our storage unit down the street, she has three of those enormous Rubbermaid containers with long sleeved shirts.

I'm afraid her roommates are going to smother her in her sleep. You truly wouldn't believe it.

10. It's the only way she'll ever understand.
You telling her will go in one ear and promptly be forgotten. A can of week-old tuna smeared under her pretty pink curtains will get the message across.

12. First roommate is gonna suck anyways
I know mine did.

I specifically asked for a non-smoking roommate and according to the records the girl they assigned with me was a non-smoker.

Here it turns out her mother was helping her fill out her dorm room application and she didn't have the heart to tell her mother she was a smoker. She told me she figured that the non-smoker probably wouldn't care if she smoked in the dorm room.

Fortunately, after I had my rant with the Dean of WOmen's about this, another room opened up on a different floor from a drop out and the remaining girl was a smoker. Sure, I could force her to smoke outside the dorm room, but everytime she returned she just smelled nasty and our room stank. My roommate was told she had to take the new room with the smoker since I was adamant about having a non-smoking roommate. Those two roomed together for the rest of the 4 years they were in college. And my ex-roomie never spoke to me again because eventually her mother found out that yes she was a smoker.

15. Remember back in college when during exams people were
allowed to smoke?

I have such a reaction to smoke. My eyes tear, my throat clogs up, my nose clogs up, I get a headache. I couldn't possibly take an exam in those circumstances.

I protested, but was told that it was a 'stress thing' and they really couldn't prevent people from smoking.

So, I insisted on taking my exam in a separate room.

was just a movie and Ellie MacPherson (sp?) doesn't exist. Hey - it could be worse - she could have a chihuahua.

22. or that Janelle had a pink HOH room on BB7 last week,
and made the most strategically retarded move of the whole series by not putting Will up. Pink apparently affects you psychologically, it makes you weaker or something. It did Janelle. B*tch is goin' HOME this week.

21. She will have larger problems than a pink dorm room.
I'm sure she's nice, but someone needs to sit her ass down and talk to her about personal finance. Maybe you or Mr. Midlo? It is nice of you to let her stay with you, and it sounds like she'll be off to college soon. It'd really be helpful for her future if someone could explain why spending all of her money on shoes is a bad idea.

26. just make sure she takes all her stuff........
Midlo, honey---your heart is 3 sizes too big! I too let a friend of 18 yo daughter move in......sob story, abusive father, mom moved to Canada, ADD, academic suspension, no where to go. Yeah, I'm still finding my stuff in places where I know I didn't leave it.
You could try telling her the roommates are likely to 'vote her off the island'. Maybe encourage her to leave all the tags on and save her receipts until she finds out how much space she's really going to have for just her stuff. Sounds like she took over your home and she assumes she will be able to do the same in the dorm. Could be a rude awakening, and good for her if she can learn from it and not just think the roomies are mean to her.

Good Luck! and make sure your door doesn't swing both ways!
